Lymph Nodes + Illness - Any advice greatly appreciated

Sorry in advance for the long post. I am very grateful that I can reach out to you on this forum.

About six months ago, my dad was diagnosed with Stage IV NH Lymphoma for the second time. A few months later, I felt compelled to check myself and felt a lymph node next to my ear. I went to see an ENT who was dismissive but after some pushing CT scanned and biopsied it (~1cm) - benign. After the procedure, he almost laughed me out the room telling me I was worrying over nothing - quite upsetting. In the month since, I have felt extremely ill - constant right side earache, lost 10lbs or so, unable to eat, persistent cough, swollen throat, shortness of breath, left side abdominal pain. GP gave me a chest x-ray (normal) and tried antibiotics/steroids/inhalers (none helped, virus tests all negative). I then felt swellings all over my neck, saw another ENT who said I had shotty lymph nodes, nothing to worry about usually but ordered an ultrasound. A few days ago, I suddenly felt a few small movable lumps above my right collarbone. Like an idiot, I googled this and read some research papers saying that this area is almost always abnormal (metastatic or lymphoma). Needless to say I haven’t been able to eat or sleep at all worrying until yesterday when I had the ultrasound. Nurse told me thin people commonly feel nodes in collarbone area?

ENT called me to tell me all normal (all neck nodes less than 7mm, he doesn’t worry until 1.5cm) including lump above collarbone. Said I could ask for a biopsy on a collarbone lump if I really wanted, but doesn’t recommend as they are small/procedure has risks and is 100% sure it’d be benign. How can he be so sure with just ultrasound when everything I’ve read suggests any nodes there, let alone multiple, is worrisome? He didn’t offer any resolution to why I’m otherwise still ill, and my GP is also stumped. Does this resonate with anyone? I am not really sure what to do at this point - should I push for biopsy anyway? Go and see another doctor? Or just wait for a few months, hope the pains disappear and do a follow-up. I am Male and early thirties.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

  • Ah im so sorry to hear about that incident with the flu misdiagnosis when you were young, that must really make things more worrying since. Good for you for being so strong for your kid! It sucks that you feel you never really cope though - I hope the MRI provides you with some positive reassurance this week!! Wishing you all the best - let me know how it goes.

My collarbone nodes I didn't get biopsied (just ultrasound), just the parotid one which was the largest. The doctor strongly advised me against biopsy of the collarbone ones but said he would do it if I really asked, I trusted his judgement at first, but they are still there and driving me crazy!!! Especially since I've read they should always be biopsied. Anyway, after months of feeling poorly, I'm just kind of miffed doctors don't find that strange and send me on my way - viruses are supposed to clear off quicker than that!!

  • Haha thanks, yeah I hope so too! I doubt it will though as you say the only real way to know is a biopsy but I'm also like that's not an easy procedure especially as fine needle aspirations seem to almost always be inconclusive. I do wish they'd biopsy my collarbone it is tiny it's not even half a centre metre but it's right under the skin I don't even have to look for it and I'm sure it's not meant to be like that!

I think if your partoid gland was your largest node and it was clear that it's most likely your illness caused the collarbone nodes to swell, maybe a cough popped it out of place! But if it will put your mind at ease have it biopsied, I haven't been offered that I hope they do to be honest because I don't know if it will reassure me until they do but I don't think they'll offer it! Also my glands in my throat I feel like have always been large like two balls either side but more protruding on the left but didn't even come up in my ultrasound, sometimes they get large and stay large!!

    thank you will do!

i hope you find some comfort until you get your answers too!

  • Can any of you give an update on what happened here? This all started October last year for me. Had swollen lymph nodes in neck (under ears both sides), groin and right armpit. Referred to haematologist and breast clinic and given all clear by December, blood tests clear. Fast forward to March and I started getting a very sore throat and a sore neck. My poking and prodding I found another large moveable lymph node right side under jaw. Was referred for an ultrasound and told they were fine. I’ve had an ongoing burning sore throat since then, which they are putting down to reflux despite the fact omeprazole has done nothing! I’ve been referred for a endoscopy as it’s went on so long. Today when feeling my neck I’ve found another swollen node under chin which I think is sub mental node. When I look in mirror I can actually see it!! Wtf is going on! It seems like one thing after another and I’m just being fobbed off. I can’t understand why I’d have all these swollen nodes for no reason at all along with a horrible sore throat. My grandfather died of throat cancer so I’m constantly anxious about this but feel like I can’t call my doctor about this new mode since they keep telling me all is clear!
  • Hiya!!

im sorry to hear you are going through the same! However, I have no progression really other than I've had an mri (no contrast) and an ultrasound and apparently there is nothing worrisome. I struggle to accept this I hoped it was a tooth problem but my dentist did and X-ray and all good but as one node is tender she told me to persist with my gp as I shouldn't be in pain. I'm also a little worried that I'm sooo sleepy every day and I've finally been sleeping the whole night for about a month now as my son finally sleeps through - I feel worse having 1-2 naps a day sometimes !

I hope you get some answers xxx

  • Hi,

I appreciate this is a super old post now, but I'm experiencing a lot of the same and was wondering if it ever settled down for you or if you're living your best lumpy life?

I've had swollen armpit nodes for months (ultrasound in august told normal), now palpable in neck, collarbone and behind ears.

Can't kick the feeling something is amiss. ENT on Sunday

  • Hey!!

sorry to hear you've ended up on my post!
unfortunately  (but I guess fortunately in the grand scheme of things?) I'm still living my best lumpy life but most all on one side. However, I met someone else through this chat who I've met with in person who is also living her best bumpy life and so of course I can't say for everyone but could truly be normal.

I hope ENT can give you more answers, I found my collarbone node in feb 2020, jaw dec 2019 none have grown but I can feel them and my armpits but I've had 2 scans on each and apparently all ok, however they ache sometimes and I do feel something is amiss also.

I hope you get some answers,

    Becky :)

  • Hey Becky,

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond, it's reassuring there's other lumpy people out there but I really do hope we all wake up one day and they miraculously disappear for all our peace of mind.

You have helped put my mind at ease after a day of panic with my ENT tomorrow. I'm the worst for googling, but I always want to check before I head to the Drs that I'm not wasting their time. Something I definitely regret for all this!! I sometimes wonder if this is just how I have always been but only noticed over the last 6 months.

My rational head says google really only shows the worst case scenario, but there is always that element of worry we all relate to.

    Thank you so much again.

  • hey i know this was two years ago but i've been googling like crazy and convinced myself there's something wrong as i've had a few swollen lymph nodes in my neck for about 2 months now - all under 1cm (i think) and haven't grown. did yours turn out to be anything? xx

    Hi,

I've got w swollen lymph nodes in my neck, went to see ENT yesterday and they are booking an ultrasound, one of mine has been there for over 5 years and ones in past few months.

he had a feel around and was like ok mm, I see your going to have a scan.

I have bad fatigue and itchy skin! Lost weight over 2 stone in couple months.

I'm also having a colonoscopy on Tuesday they want to look at my bowel.

it just makes you think about what's happening inside that you can't see!

I've read posts and forums and most are just lymph nodes that haven't gone down, but some can be something else all be it very little in comparison.

    any advice would be welcome

  • Hi all

i recently discovered a swollen lymph node about a month  ago, I was just massaging body cream in when I discovered it. It's just a the very bottom of my neck to the right. All of a sudden I'm getting a lot of pain in the neck and throat with shooting pains in my arms. I've had these pains before and it was absolutely debilitating:( I only managed to get rid of it as a dr from cruise ships gave me steroids! Can't believe it's happening again, I'm not sure if it's something to do with the lymph that popped up...maybe I've aggravated it by prodding and pocking it! As I've read from other people, it gives you awful anxiety so you're constantly checking it! I'm terrified :(

im quite a slim lean lady and feel quite bumpy all over but it's mainly muscle and bone never had a lump like this before!

dr wasn't overly concerned but as with any bump he wants it checked out and I'm seeing ENT next week...what usually happens at these appointments?
