Biopsy results - more questions than answers

Hello!

I posted on here a week or so ago. I had a 20cm ovarian cyst removed 2 weeks ago along with my left ovary, fallopian tube and my appendix (which they said looked inflamed). They said there could be a chance it is cancer due to the appearence of the cyst and elevated CA125 levels. So I've been anxiously waiting for my results. Last night, I found a sizeable hard lump in the left side of my lower abdomen which caused me a bit of alarm when I discovered it. I don't know how long it's been there as I had a lot of lumps in my abdomen which belonged to the cyst. I have also continued to have a very unpleasant spasmy pain in my stomach which was present before the op and has continued after. I also remember that in February I was getting blood in my stool for a few weeks. I didn't go to the GP because on the NHS website it said to only go if it persists beyond 3 weeks.

I decided to give my GP a ring today to tell him about my worries (the lump and continuing pain). The GP said he had received a letter today with the results from the lab regarding the cyst they removed. They said it is a borderline ovarian tumour which is good news as usually once they have been surgically removed, no further treatment is necessary. However, they have said I need to get an urgent colonoscopy. Now I'm feeling a bit worried as obviously I've still got this lump and the pain. Also during my hospital stay, the doctors asked me over and over again about my bowels which I thought was a bit strange. I had completely forgotten about the blood in my poo thing so I didn't even mention it.

Obviously I just need to wait until the colonoscopy to find out more, just wondering if anyone else has had this experience? Has anyone else had to get a colonscopy after this type of surgery? Can I borderline ovarian tumour spread to the bowel? I'm now no longer worrying about ovarian cancer but now I'm scared I've got bowel cancer.

  • Hello Orchid_

I'm so pleased to hear that you had some positive news from your GP earlier this week although obviously it's understandable that you're still feeling concerned about things.

Did you mention the lump and pain to your GP? It's easy to forget points that you want to mention or things that have happened when a Dr asks questions so sometimes it can be helpful to write them down. Maybe you could start a list of points that you want to raise or questions you want to ask before your appointment. If you take the list to the hospital with you, you'll be able to write down the answers.

I'm unsure if any of our members here have been in a similar situation but hopefully if there is then they will post to share their experiences with you.

I do hope that you don't have to wait too long for your appointment. If you think it might help to speak to one of our nurses in the meantime then you're welcome to call them. They are back in the office after the bank holiday and available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn,

Thanks for replying. I did mention the pain and the lump to the GP and they advised me to tell the colorectal consultant about it. I have a telephone consultation with him on Friday so will make sure to inform him of my symptoms. I've written a wee list of the things I want to tell him. Hopefully I can get some answers soon. :( I just want to not be in pain anymore and be able to focus on getting better.
