Biopsy results

Around 4 weeks ago I had a fine needle tes.  Two weeks later I was booked for phone appointment with my doctor - senior consultant.

phone appointment below.

Senior consultant:  so you have a swallen lump under your eir that grows slowly?!

I: yes, that's correct

SC: we need to investigate further. I'll book you for MRI scan

I: Byt I had already MRI scan around 6 weeks ago.  We had phone appointment since.  In factI had a fine needle test two weeks ago and I thought this appointment was about results.

SC: hold the line, let me check.

short while later.

SC: there was not enough tissue for results.

I: you told me you thought it was benign.

SC: I still think so. On MRI scan it doesn't look like cancer.  May be we just take the whole thing out?

I (a bit scared): don't we need to know what it is first?  May be I need core needle test?

SC:  ok, I'll book you for core needle test.

A week later at the same radiologist who did a fine needle test for me.  The doctor seid that actually tissue sumples taken inittialy were enough, but they didn't confirm what they expected.  When i asked what they expected, she said that on MRI scan it looked like cancer, so they expected canser.

NOW, I'm not only confused (since I had two opposite opinion), but thinking of changing doctor as well.

I called SC's secretary tuday and apparantly they have latest results back already.  So, tomorrow, on my birthday, at some point, hopefully I'll get a phone call and will be told that I have cancer (there's no other suspect).

  • I am so sorry you are going through this especially at such a strange time. The road to diagnosis isn't always straight forward (it certainly wasn't for me) I hope you get the answers you need and fingers crossed it's a positive result x

  • Update.  The doctor called and said the results were the same as from previous test. I asked if it was cancer, he replied no, but that it was very rare condition.  No name, no diagnosis, all I know is it's very rare condition.  needs further investigation.  Operation is iminent, only after they take the tumor out, they can properly diagnose what it is.  cancer is not 100% excluded.  Because of doctor's accent, i was missing half what he was telling me.  Meanwhile, I'm swetting a lot in the night and lymph node is swallen and painful.

Is it possible that two tests could fail to detect cancer (one fine needle test and second core needle test)? Totally confused, I really don't know what to think.
