Enlarged Spleen

Hi, this is my first post, I might waffle on a bit!

In December I had my yearly review for my high blood pressure, this always involves a blood test, I was told I have a "deranged liver" I've been told this by a different doctor who sent me for an ultrasound and nothing came of it a few years ago. This new ultrasound showed my spleen was enlarged, 16cm, I was then referred to a haematologist and a gastroenterologist. I had a CT scan which showed I had enlarged lympth nodes around my spleen, i was then sent for a bone marrow biopsy (I was so scared but not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be!) By this time the lockdown was taking hold and I had a phone appointment, he said my bone marrow was fine and that's good news but want to do a lympth node biopsy to see what's going on... in my head I thought he meant I was in the clear, I was so happy. Eventually some departments started to open back up and I was sent to endoscopy as an urgent case so they could do a fine needle aspiration, my swollen lympth nodes are behind my stomach. I have anaemia and a low platelet count, it was 69 in january, 67 in march, 65 before I went in for the procedure so they gave me a platelet transfusion. With covid I was the only patient in the department which was helpful for my anxiety, i felt like i could ask questions more when normally i think "they're busy, I'll let them see to that patient"

The doctor then spoke to me and explained I was still being tested for lymphoma, my heart dropped, I thought it was over, he explained it's not usual practise to give transfusions in that department. I only remember 5 minutes of the procedure but I was in there for an hour, there were complications and I had lost a pint of blood, luckily they had started clotting so thankful I had the platelet transfusion! But my platelet count is now 63. I had to stay in hospital overnight to be observed but it's a week later since I've been out and I feel back to normal

When I got home I read the notes the doctor wrote and for diagnosis he put "lymphoma suspected" my lympth node sizes are: 12 x 18mm, 20 x 11mm, 14 x 16mm and 23 x 17mm. I noticed he wrote that my spleen was 14cm so looks like it has shrunk 2 cm...

He said a week for the results but when I got home I had a phone appointment letter for a haematology on the 8th June so I'm unsure if I find out this week or 8th June...

  • Hi Vivalaleslo and welcome to the forum.

Waiting for a diagnosis is always a challenging time but you're not alone as many of our members have been in this position so will know what you're going through at the moment and will hopefully pop by soon to offer their support and advice.

We know we can't take the worry away but we're thinking of you and will have our fingers crossed for good news when the results are back.

Wishing you all the best for the 8th Vivalaleslo.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi

I hope your well? I was just wandering what was your outcome ? I am going through the same thing just been referred to haematology after ultersound showed enlarged spleen 14cm and bloods came back slightly anemic and showed some inflammation.. i am so scared my grandad had blood cancer. I have 2 children currently trying for my 3rd witch decided today to put on hold

  • Hi _G!

It's been a long journey but I finally got a diagnosis, I have autoimmune hepatitis with some liver cirrhosis caused by this. I am currently on all sorts of meds but it's under control and I really like my new gastro doctor.

My spleen was working overtime trying to do the work of my liver, its still enlarged and caused me a bit of pain during a flare up earlier in the year.

I really hope your outcome is a simple explanation and easily fixed, wishing you all the best xxx

  • Thank you so much for replying

Am so sorry to here about your diagnosis but also happy that you got some answers. Hope your feeling better.

I have an autoimmune disease graves disease witch has caused liver damage through my medication. I just freaked out when they told me that been referred  to haematology i just think blood cancer all my pains or on my left pain doc seem very concerned that i had shoulder pain my anxiety is through the roof..i sufferd a miscarriage last month so now am thinking that it happened beacuse there might be somthing seriously wrong.. seeing my grandad go through blood cancer it such a worry

  • If your meds have caused liver damage then its highly likely your spleen is just helping your liver out! I understand your worry, the doctors are just checking everything to rule stuff out. Sending healing vibes your way!

  • Hi I just wanted to check in on how you were I've had an enlarged spleen for 5 years (that they've known off) I still have no answers as to why x if you want to talk at all feel free xx

  • Hi, not sure if you will reply, i am glad you got some answers. I have had this for quite some time but they have only just picked up on it now after my CT scan showed i have an enlarged spleen with enlarged lymph nodes. I just wanted to ask if you ever experienced mild or really bad pains in the abdominal region??

  • Hi there

Do you ever have bad pains in your abdominal region at all?

I have an enlarged spleen and have been experiencing discomfort for over 6 years now, I have only recently found out my spleen is enlarged and lymph nodes are enlarged. I have an appointment on the 16th Feb. But i was just wondering if you have experienced any sort of pain in the abdomen?

  • Hi there!

I do get pains in my side, like twinges mainly but last year it felt quite severe so I went to a&e (mainly because my gp would always send me there anyway with my medical history) because I have liver cirrhosis they kept me in for 4 days, better to be safe than sorry, nothing really came from it, they gave me painkillers and honestly I think the bed rest did the trick in that particular case. Also I can get pains if I've eaten a big meal, stomach and spleen fighting over room!

What's next for you? Are they going to do a lymph node biopsy?

  • Thanks for the reply!

The pains I have are always severe which is why I am currently on Co-Codamol to keep the pain away I have an appointment with a Haemotologist to discuss the next steps which is on the 16th, so 2 days now. I am very nervous but I do just try to take my mind off it. But it does gete really hard.
