Lockdown Neck and Throat.

I'm starting to freak out a bit now. I do suffer from bad health anxiety btw

Prior to the lockdown I felt fine then early into it I had one bad night of anxiety and ever since I've had problems with my throat and neck. Constant swallowing, neck pain, then it's progressed to shoulder blade pain and back pain but I try and put this down to poor posture sitting around for 8 weeks. But now I'm getting ear pain and that really does scare me. Can anxiety trigger all of this ?

I'm getting a chest xray and waiting for a camera down the throat appointment but of course the coronavirus has made things very difficult. I've convinced myself I have either throat or neck cancer because it's approaching 8 weeks now. I'm aware of anxiety constant swallowing conditions like globus but this seems to have gone past the point ?

  • I'm the exact same! Had neck pain to start with and now had earache for 3 weeks! Worse in my right ear but I sometimes feel it in my left . I've had antibiotics and an ear sparky but neither worked :( I didn't even think earache could last this long!
sucks doesn't it ... I hope you start to feel better soon x

  • There's just so many things it can be.

I mean prior to lockdown I had none. I take lanzaprole but we have to weigh up the options.

Has in the first week of lockdown a terible tumour decided to form in my throat and it's getting worse undetected, what a coincedence that would be.

Could it be severe anxiety then long hours of staying indoors, lack or fresh air and anxiety, a poor diet comfort eating too much chocolate, not talking as much as normal so throat has dried up vocal chords.

Is it lock down depression and the mental side causing phantom pains, perhaps it is something but not too serious, something like axid reflux/Gerd, the constant swallowing down to anxiety and this causing the neck to swell but now the ear pain, nobody likes that do they. I've had severe ear pain and this pain is nowhere near that, problem is until somebody physically looks at you and sticks a camera down there your always going to think is this the big one, the bad one and what a time to get it with coronavrius shutting down all but severe cases. In our situation your voice would have to be so hoarss, coughing up blood and massive ear pain to get seen, so we are nowhere near this situation but do we feel any better for it..no..it's always in the back of your mind...if we do not have a second wave of coronvirus.

For me it's my voice that concerns me..been like this for 10 weeks now but does not get much worse so perhaps it's all in my head...do you all have similar ?

  • Mine started just before lockdown , I noticed a lump on the back wall of my throat ... the dr put me on a two week referral to ent who then noticed I had one larger tonsil but said it was nothing to be concerned over . They looked in my throat and said all was ok .They said I wasn't urgent and it could all wait for further investigation. Then after lockdown started I started to feel that horrible lump in the throat feeling , it was anxiety as that has now gone but it was awful at the time, like something was stuck .
the next week the neck pain started and I convinced myself it had something to do with my throat lump and tonsil . Next the the ear pain started. I had telephone appointments with my gp who prescribed antibiotics and ear Spray , these did nothing so again I got into a panic and had a full blown panic attack and ended up in A&e. They then ordered an mri , mostly because I was in such a state but also to rule stuff out . I had this last Saturday and am still waiting in results . I have health anxiety and I'm convinced I have throat / tonsil / salivery cancer . It's just a waiting game . How can you have ear pain for 3 weeks?! Although it's not horrendous pain it's just niggly and there most of the day .
I don't know how much is anxiety and what is real :(

here anytime u need to chat x

  • Yes the Ear pain is similar. Not constant but twinges to let you know it's there.

Severe healthy anxiety can trigger the body to do all sorts of things so we have to hope we are just getting ourselves at it again.

  • GERD is interesting.

They provide a list of foods to avoid. I've been binging oranges think it's healthy, that's a no no, chocolate is a no no, I've been eating loads of that in the lock down, actually quite a few on the list I've been eating...it's easy to do..your depressed anxious stuck indoors and eat rubbish

    Thoughts ?

  • Hi Gravy,

Also experiencing the exact same symptoms as you. Started 2 weeks ago, pain all down one side of my neck that spreads to chest, back, ear, it doesn't stop me doing anything but it's uncomfortable and just always there as much as you try to forget.
Doctor hasn't been much help, just said I'd laid on it funny and put me on painkillers which oddly don't touch it at all. I'm only 26 so his response was 'you're young, you're fine' which does nothing to reassure at all.
I suffer from health anxiety too so I have no idea if I'm fabricating these symptoms but like you I can't possibly be reassured until I've had some tests. I'm also waiting on a dermatology appointment for a suspicious mole on my foot which makes me worry more, although I know it's very unlikely the two would be linked seeing as it's on my foot.
So I have no real advice but just reassuring to know someone else is having the same! Reassures that it could possibly be anxiety!

  • How are you doing now gravy? Has your pain eased? x

  • Yes it has.

Looks like it was the old lockdown health anxiety causing the constant swallowing which thus set off my throat muscles. Stinging comes and goes but perhaps my poor diet in lockdown has not helped.

Also started taking Omeprazole which might be doing the job.

It sounds like anxiety because the other day I started to overthink things again and bang next morning my throat started again.

    Thanks for asking regards

  • Hi all

Did any of you get any answers. I started having globus sensation at the beginning of Nov and it's still with me. I have had a Gastro and an ENT see me, had a full gastroscopy, 4 laryngoscopies, and MRI of the tongue and neck a CT of the chest, 2 ultrasounds. Tried 3 different types of antibiotics and steroids and been on Nexium for 3 months. No relief really. They don't know what's causing it but the only real finding is my lingual tonsils are symmetrically prominent but that's all. They say it's nothing serious, but my throat sensation is mostly there and also have some kind of pain on left ear and under my chin.

    Any thoughts?

  • Hi

I had a camera down the throat about 4 months ago and got the all clear. It's anxiety for me. If I ever get a bad bout of it I get that swallowing sensation.

The specialist sat with me and showed the video of my throat etc etc showing nothing wrong.

hopefully yours is something similar along the lines of stress anxiety caused my lockdowns/covid fears
