So scared

Hi everyone, this is my first post. I'm currently waiting for a call back from 111 as my GP surgery is closed until Monday. I am 34 and have a 7 month son who I am breastfeeding. Yesterday morning I had a blocked milk duct which I cleared quite quickly, but then the skin on my areola went really weird and thick. It is also really sore. The same thing happened about a week and a half ago, but it went back to normal after a few hours, whereas this has been like this now for over 24 hours.

I am so scared as I know this is a telltale sign of inflammatory breast cancer. I know no one on here can diagnose me, but I need an outlet. OH thinks that my nipple is infected and that is what has caused the swelling.

I am so scared of cancer. Everyone says how horrible chemo is and I'm so frightened of leaving my son without his mummy

  • Oh no, sorry to hear that. Has he kept you on the same antibiotics or tried you on different ones? I hope they start working soon. It's so awful to have the worry and fear. I could say try not to worry but I know you won't be able to help yourself! So I hope the antibiotics start to work soon for you.

I've had a distraction from my worries since yesterday morning, but not a nice one. We were told one of our beloved pet ducks has to be put down. We have two, and we treat them like babies. They wear shoes when we take them for walks and nappies in the house. We even have a pram for them!! My heart is broken.

I really hope the antibiotics work. Next Thursday seems such a long time to wait to see the GP again, especially when you're so worried xx

  • Thanks, no it is the same antibiotics I've been on since Saturday. My mind is racing, it's really horrible especially when I should be enjoying this time with my son.

So sorry to hear about your ducks. We have a dog and cats and I know what it's like to lose a beloved pet. Big hugs to you x

  • Thank you for the hugs. I'm just devastated. We're taking her in at 10am tomorrow.

So sorry to hear your GP hasn't even changed the antibiotics and you're being left to cope with all this worry. I hope you can find some way of distracting yourself - I know that's easier said than done though. Maybe ring the GP back again tomorrow. Did you tell him how worried you are that it could be something more serious?

I really hope the antibiotics start working soon and the swelling goes down xx

  • Hi hun,

We said goodbye to Pumpkin today. It was heartbreaking but she went really peacefully and calmly and that's a comfort at least.

How are you getting on? Has there been any improvement yet? xxx

  • Hey, my nipple is better than it was in that the redness has subsided and it's not as painful when I feed, however the top part of my areola is still swollen. It's making me feel so miserable which is frustrating as my partner has 4 days off work this weekend so I want to be having a nice time together, but I'm so scared that I just keep crying. How are you doing?

  • Hi hun, sorry it's taken so long to get back in touch. I've been having a hard time of it and have had so much going on.

Have you had any improvements yet with your nipple? What has your GP said?

I really hope you've had some good news xxx

  • Hey, lovely to hear from you. I'm sorry to hear you've been having a hard time. Have you had any answers yet?

My nipple is still swollen, but the redness has gone away and it's not as bad as it was originally so the GP said he is not concerned. I'm a bit in limbo with it really as I would like an answer as to why it is like this, but I don't think I'm going to get one.

  • Ah hun, I'm glad to hear things have improved and the GP doesn't think there's any need for concern, but I can understand you feeling frustrated at the lack of any real info. Are you feeling any better in yourself? I hope you're not as worried and scared as you were before.

I get my results on Friday af 12.30, I'll update you after my appointment.

Hope you're doing better and are able to enjoy your time with your baby boy again :) xx

  • I am feeling better mentally thank you. I suffer from health anxiety though so as part of that I feel like I need an explanation for every bodily symptom I have, which can be frustrating at times. It's possible that the swelling is just a result of trauma as that nipple in particular seems to take a beating from my little boy lol.

I have been relaxing a bit more though and taking more of a que sera sera attitude which has helped.

I look forward to your update on Friday and hope it's good news.

  • I'm so happy you're feeling calmer now and managing to relax more, that's so good to hear! :) Health anxiety can be really debilitating and so much harder to deal with when you have a young baby. I hope that having a relatively positive outcome this time will help you to deal with future scares in a more positive way. I know how easily all past experiences can go out of the window when that terror kicks in!! But it does help a little to have positive outcomes you can look back on.

Anyway I'll keep you posted after my appointment and hope your son goes a bit easier on your sore nipple!! xxx
