Post menopausal bleeding

Hi , hoping for some advice and maybe some reassurance. I am 43 and was told at the end of last year that I had had my menopause. 2 years with no periods. Recently I had thrush which is really unusual for me as I've only had one time before in my teens. I had to treat it twice to get rid of it but now this week I've started bleeding. First little strands of bright red that look like cotton strands. But now there when I wipe. Also have some dull pain, I feel uncomfortable up inside and am also now feeling g abit of pressure on my back passage like you get when you're in labour. Apologises for such graphic description!  Anyway rang docs yesterday she said urgent referral was needed. Hospital rang me this morning and I am going in on friday afternoon for a  ultrasound.

I'm just wondering if this blood could bust be from my recent bout of thrush? Maybe I have a sore up there? No one has actually examined me .

Also i had cells zapped in 2010 for severe dyskaryosis. Does the fact I've previously had abnormal cells make me more likely to have cervical or some other gynae cancer in the future? My smears are up to date and next one is due in July this year.

I know I shouldn't worry because there are so many other things this abnormal bleed can be. But I'm so worried .

Thank you In advance for reading this x

  • Hello anniefandango

I noticed that you'd not had a reply to your post and just wanted to pop by to say Hello! and to ask how your appointment has gone today. I hope that the hospital were able to give you some answers.
If there's anything you'd like to speak to one of our nurses about then feel free to give them a call. They are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

  • Hi Annie,

I am going through the same thing at the moment. Last period 5 months ago and then light bleeding since April. Had my scan today and was told i had thickening of the womb and would be referred for a biopsy, also had a blood test (not sure what one) and that has come back raised with a note to say await scan to compare???  It's a nightmare that it's a Friday so have to wait the weekend worrying.  (Which i don't normally do, but have a weird feeling?!!)

How did your scan go today? Keeping my fingers crossed for you x

  • Hi SamJ, thanks for answering.

Had my ultrasounds at 3 pm. They said they could see a cyst on my ovary and a blockage in my fallopian tube. They didn't say much else other than that someone would be in touch. One of the sonographers asked me if my doc had taken bloods and if I had had a temperature in the last few days to which I said no I feel absolutely fine. because I work as a medical centre receptionist I have my temp taken regularly with the current COVID situation.  So I'm none the wiser but the bleeding has stopped today and the pain I've been experiencing has subsided. They didn't say anything about my womb lining.

I guess we both just have to wait to see what happened next, its going to feel like a long weekend!

Please do stay in touch and let me know how you get on x

  • Hi Ann-Marie

GP rang today to say she will refer me on the 2 week cancer pathway but not to worry as normal procedure.  The 2 week wait isn't running on time (understandably) due to covid19 so it's just a keep my fingers crossed situation.

Still bleeding and very slight ache so still hoping i am goin through the menopause rather than anything sinister...although every time i go to the loo and wipe i start to worry all over again.

I'll keep you posted and please keep in touch too x

  • Good luck SamJ.  my appointment with gynae- oncology is next Thursday. feels like a long week ahead xx

  • Got a call and my appointment is Tuesday - at least they are moving us along quickly.  Think once we have answers good or bad we can deal with it.  I'm keeping busy...my house and garden have never been so tidy! Working from home which is nice as i work in an all male environment at the office so at least i don't have to put up with them haha.

Good luck to us both for next week...xx

  • Hope all went ok today Annie xx

  • Hi, sorry I've only just seen this message. All was.ok at my appointment. The lining of my womb was 3.5 mm which the nurse was happy with. She did my smear while I was there. With regards to the swollen fallopian tube and the cyst she said she would speak to the consultant to see what happens next but she didnt seem concerned.

I havent had any more bleeding  since then but really terrible constipation- a problem ive never had before and also consistently needing  a wee with lower back pain.

I rang the hospital a few days a go and was told that the nurse wont speak to the consultant until the smear results which I guess is reassuring as they dont seem worried however I'm still getting pain and can barely poop :(

I spoke to my doc yesterday and she invited me in for bloods today and prescribed me some movicol. So I'm really none the wiser as to what's happening down there at the moment.

    How are things with you?
