Colposcopy

Hi all, been for my colposcopy today as been bleeding after sex and been very bloated and going to the toilet a lot. She took a biopsy, and told me she thinks it's cervical cancer as she can see a growth and abnormal cells. I will get results in a week, and then will be booked in for an mri and a plan of action can be made for me. I'm so scared, everybody is telling me to wait for the biopsy results before panicking, but I can't help it I'm absolutely petrified. Just wondering if any of you have been through something similar and have any advice.

Thanks x

  • Hi thanks for replying, it's been a bad day to say the least. I didn't really get much info as it was all over the phone due to covid, but the mri could take up to two weeks I'm just praying it's sooner as I'm really really panicking I've left it too late and it's spread, every pain or twinge I get now is all heightened for me and it's scaring me. I'm just so upset for my children, it's just me and my 2 babies (11) and (12) and I really don't want to leave them. I'm trying so hard to put a brave face on for them and not think the worst but it is so hard being in the unknown. Xx

  • So sorry to hear this. Hope your mri appointment comes through soon so you have all the information and know what treatment is needed. We are here for you anytime. I've got my colposcopy Friday had bloods done today.   Xx

  •  I've got a great family behind me and a lovely partner who now plans to move in with me (god help me) just hope I've caught it early, but working full time and looking after two children I haven't really thought about myself or any symptoms until I've been furloughed and thought oh I don't feel right.
I hope Friday goes well for you will be thinking of you xx

  • Hi Jen.

Its natural to be scared, but please try not to think the worst at this point. Cervical cancer takes a long time to develop usually from abnormal cells to cancer and even a few weeks now is not likely to make a difference in the scheme of things. You may need other scans-it’s usual to have a ct scan for example and it all takes time. Initially I assumed it would have spread but the mri showed it hadn’t and I was diagnosed at stage 2b which was very treatable with chemo and radiation. Things are never usually as bad as you imagine, and treatment can be extremely successful. I was guilty of not being up to date with smear tests, so I was very lucky that it was still confined to the cervix. It just shows how long it takes to develop. Try to think positively until you know more, because otherwise you will drive yourself crazy with the “what ifs”. x

  • Gutted my colposcopy has been moved to next Thursday 28th instead of tomorrow. Just wanted it done so I knew if anything was wrong. Still my bloods should be back Tuesday so I'll have a bit more of an idea then I guess. Thinking of you all sending lots of pma xx

  • Sorry to hear you are going through this. It's hard, our minds cant relax and is totally normal to feel scared.

I find it strange your doctors has already said it could be cervical cancer already. The growth could be anything and not cancerous.

Have they done a blood work up which shows abnormal protiens? I had similar and it was fibroids, some I had removed and then a coil fitted, this would have taken me through menopause.. Fibroid have been known to shrink during menopause.

    Breathing excersises helps with worry.

Here is to a good outcome.

    K x

  • No I've had no bloods done at all, when I went for the colposcopy she said at the beginning if she thought it was cancer she would tell me, and with the symptoms I've been having and what she saw she said she thought it was cancer. I have my mri appointment through for Tuesday so hopefully will know what I'm facing by the end of next week. Xx

  • Blood tests are not usually done at this stage. There isn’t a blood test for cervical cancer, but as you’ve already had a cancer diagnosis blood tests will happening as part of the general testing process to prepare for treatment. At least I read from your other post you’d had a confirmed diagnosis-was I mistaken in that? x

  • Hi Jen, can I ask what your sypmtoms were please? And did your doctor look at your cervix and say it could be cervical cancer and that’s why you went for the colposcopy?

i am in the same boat as you atm, just waiting for my colposcopy, I have a 10 month old and I’m only 23, i am dreading the worst right now, my baby needs me

  • Hi, I went to the doctors as I was bleeding after sex every time, very watery discharge and always wet and very bad bloating, she did a smear and referred me straightaway as I was bleeding quite heavily from my cervix she said. Went for the colposcopy, she said she thought it was cancer but couldn't say it was as had to wait for biopsy to confirm, which sadly it did. I have my mri tomorrow and hopefully can find out what stage I'm at.
Good luck for your colposcopy I'm 33 so your age is an advantage I think so try not to worry keep yourself busy xx
