Mole Itching? Slight rash to side of it? Confused-Covidworld

Hi, I hope everyone is safe and happy this weekend.

Wondering if anyone can provide some advice/help?

Caught a bit of sun whilst wearing sunscreen on and noticed my Mole on my neck started to itch / around area, minor sunburn, Lil tinge of red. I've been applying aftersun since and skin has gone back to normal however the Mole area is persistant.

I've had this mole since birth 30 years ago.

The right hand side of it has like a circular smaller rash mark that appears quite sore red and slightly rashy/scabby.
The left side is fine and I have one of those 'annoying' hairs that grow randomly.

It's always been raised, and always had different shades.

It's a bank holiday weekend, I'm now staying at my mothers (Covid-related, I've been working abroad a number of years and my registered GP is 100 miles way and isn't open due to Covid).

Would it be wise to go to hospital to check it out?
If I wait till Monday I'm unsure whether GP's are even accepting people to check it out?

I just wondered if someone could provide insight as I do not know who else to ask.

thank you for reaching out :)

  • Hi you could post this message in the "ask the nurses" forum. They don't diagnose but they will be able to direct you on what to do. If you are in the UK you can phone 1 11:24 hours a day. That is what I did when I had a lump in my mouth and they advised me to see my GP. GPs are still seeing people despite Corona if they have lumps but the nurses or 111 will be able to advise you as to who to see given that you are 100 miles away.

  • Hi,

Almost all GPs are still seeing patients but some appointments are done by phone. I suggest you ring your GP tomorrow and explain the problem to the receptionist. If you don't get a face to face appointment they will ring you back. Most GPs are asking patients with dodgy moles to send them a photo online so they can see the problem. If they can't diagnose the problem or they think it looks suspicious they are then referring patients to dermatology under the 2 week referral rule or they are forwarding the photo to dermatology who may ask for a referral to be made. Most hospital dermatology departments are running as normal to see new referrals - they are completely safe areas, away from any Covid 19 wards etc.

Don't turn up at A&E to have it looked at as they are unable to refer you to dermatology - they will just tell you to see your GP as it's not an emergency.

Hopefully your mole or the skin under./around it has a rash or infection, however it does need checking out. 75% of referrals to dermatology get a clean bill of health so there is a good chance yours is OK. Don't worry about the wait to ring your GP, a few days wait isn't going to make it worse.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
