Worried about inflammatory breast cancer ??

About 6 weeks ago I was diagnosed with mastitis I'm not breastfeeding and I'm 19 . I've had this a few times before in the last year but it's never been like this before. I was first given a weeks worth of antibiotics which I took and they didn't work. I was then given a weeks worth of steroids which also didn't work. Doctor tried to give me more steroids but they made me feel too sick and then the same happened with a different antibiotic. My left boob is so swollen and red and painful. I've seen on this website that if mastitis doesn't get better after antibiotics you should be referrered to a breast clinic.  This just hasn't happened. Now around a year ago I found a lump in my right breast which was a fibroadenoma. Since then it's got a lot bigger and doctors said it should be fine. In the last few days I've found a new lump in the right breast which is red and hot which makes me Worry. I'm massively worried that it's inflammatory breast cancer, I've seen the symptoms and the way that the supposed mastitis has behaved etc. I'm honestly so worried. I have an appointment with the nurse tomorrow but I wish I couldve been referred to breast clinic before now. I know cancer is rare in someone of my age but rare doesn't mean it's not possible so I'm so worried. I genuinely feel like Doctors's don't take me seriously because of my age. So scared x

  • Hello [@Lucymae8]‍  Sorry to hear about mastitis and that antibiotics and treatment didnt work.

Can you tell GP what you have told us and your reasons to want to see a breast clinic?

It's good that the doctors said fibroadenoma should be fine.

It's wise to tell GP you found a new lump in the right breast which is red and hot, sorry you are so worried.

Nurses on here cannot diagnose but they are very nice, when you riing the helpline or post in the "ask the nurses forum"

Good luck with your appointment with the nurse tomorrow, you could mention breast clinic to herr..

I don't know if you have been looking online at Dr Google, if so, don't it scares people.

Please keep us informed of your progress.

  • I've been referred to the breast clinic but as non urgent and I really disagree with this. I found a lump last year and I was out through as urgent and this time everything is worse and it's been non urgent. I'm so fed up x

  • Hi [@Lucymae8]‍

Aww sorry to hear you have been referred to as non urgent.

I'm no expert but I wonder if the doctors, after examining you may know how cancer feels and this may be the reason they referred you as non urgent? Just a guess.

Did they tell you why it was a non urgent case?

    Meanwhile hugs

  • Hi,

I was just wondering how this all ended because I'm in a very similar situation now (I'm 18 and referred to the breast clinic for skin changes).

    Hope everything was okay!
