Daily fever for weeks and blood results

For 6 weeks now I've had fatigue and daily low grade fevers, usually around 37.8, 37.9 or 38. Sometimes it's a bit lower in the day but I do have to take paracetamol to feel better. In addition neck glands have been up for 6 weeks. I've not had a cough or sore throat or lost weight. I had a complete blood count last week which showed I'm a bit anemic. The doctor says she's not sure why I'm having persistent low grade fevers and lethargy and said maybe she will refer me for a chest X-ray but she left the phone call without really much of a plan. I can't see why she'd mention a chest X-ray if my glands are up in my neck. This was a telephone call and I've not actually been examined. Since this is going on is it possible a cbc doesn't always detect cancer because my gp felt the blood result would have shown that. I'm at a loss what to think or do because it's been 6 weeks of this. Any ideas or anyone had symptoms like this before a diagnosis?

  • What are the steroids for? Are they supposed to help with the temps or build up strength? (Sorry, I don't have much knowledge of medical things)! I take fostair, a steroid inhalers every day, morning and night, for my asthma. I usually have to take ventolin as well. The fostair helps my breathing stay more controlled, but it's quite a strong one. Though I'm sure this is different to the type of steroids you have to take?

i think for me I find it hard if I'm invited to something, or a family day out is planned. I now worry in advance how I'm going to feel, will I get through the day ok etc.  I feel people won't understand if I cancelled on them on the day. My husband is very understanding about it though so that's definitely a help.
I'm really sorry your immune system is now lowered. How annoying your meds are doing that to you .
keep me updated on how you're doing. I totally understand what you're going through and I know it helps me speaking to someone who understands! Xx

  • Hi my love so the steroids are a way of dampening your immune system which in turn is supposed to stop any inflammation in the body. I have severe eczema and have done since I was born and I've had steroids before for that it's called prednisolone it can be given for many different things... oh no so your on quite a cocktail of things already know you've got all this going on also :(  I'm petty much the same i can't really plan anything in advance too much as I never know how bad I'm going to feel on what day and i totally get it my family have been starting to joke with me saying things like are you still sick and I think it'd just because I don't physically look sick and I can do most things but i will be running a fever while doing anything and then feel like I need to sleep for a week after. I certainly will keep you updated and you also let me know how you get on when you call your doctor and try and have lots of questions you want answering ready for him. it's crazy cause I wish we both weren't getting this sickness but it's nice to have someone who knows exactly what I'm going through. Lots of love Chris x

  • I get the joke thing too. My brother thought I couldn't be bothered with a family bbq and other things, so eventually I asked my husband to speak to him and explain that I usually medicate as much as possible to get through things and I can seem ok; sometimes I am and sometimes I'm battling through. I do get some good days but then crash again.
I hope the steroids help. My brother has had bad eczema too since he was small. I know from him how difficult that can be. Big hugs and keep me posted! Xx

  • Hi, in addition to my message earlier, I thought I'd update you. A doctor rang me today to discuss my medications. She also discussed my symptoms ive explained to you. She thinks 5 months is very long for low grade fevers so even though I've had previous full blood tests, she's ordered another for a week's time in case something else is going on, which didn't show up in earlier tests. So...I'm sure they will come back negative but I'll let you know!

  • That's really good to hear at least if there is something now going on that wasn't previously it will show up.. although i hope not if that makes any sense. Keep me updated on what results say and if you get any further answers. Having a nice quiet evening in front of the tv hope you enjoy your weekend also xx

  • Thank you! Part of me thinks I'm sure it will come back normal, therefore still no answers, and the other part thinks...oh no, what if?! But I'm usually someone who thinks I'll worry when I need to, so I'll stick to that for now! Evening watching the TV sounds perfect to me! Have a great weekend xx

  • I need to take a leaf out of your book as I'm a prolific worrier I'm trying to be better at it every day and I'm getting there. It's hard isn't it cause we don't want to hear any bad results but at the same time when things are coming back normal we're back to square one again. Anyway enjoy the sunshine if you get out this weekend. Also if you use social media you are welcome to send me your Facebook and I will add you. I feel like I've made a friend and would love to keep in touch even when we are both better xxx

  • Awww, honestly I can be good at worrying! I find I'm more like that if it's to do with one of my girls. Happy to share Facebook. I've enjoyed chatting with you too and to know someone who understands! I've sent you a friend request on this group so when you accept I'll send you my details for FB

  • Hiya so sorry I didn't even realise I could get a friend request on here i usually get an email when you've replied... i have accepted and don't worry if you don't use social media that much we can chat here makes no difference just lovely to have an extra person to listen and talk to xx

  • Hi, I didnt realise either until I just looked on here! I've sent it a message on here with my FB details. I didn't get an email to say you'd accepted so you just need to check your messages. I use FB quite a lot actually x
