Lump under areola for more than 6 months

Hey

Basically I found a hard pea sized lump right under my areola about 6 months ago. It feels like it's connected deeper into my boob. I was scared to mention it to my doctor because I'd seen a female doctor before about pain and hardness in my boob and she told me my age meant it's very unlikely to be anything bad and not to worry. I'm 21 now and I've been monitoring this lump but it is not going away. It's not painful but can be uncomfortable to touch, particularly recently. I can also get pain in my armpit sometimes.

I spoke to my doctor on Monday and he's referred me to the breast clinic.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Or know how long it takes to get your appointment through from the breast clinic ?

I'm really anxious about it and with coronavirus my brains just going into overdrive.

    Hi DVLXX,

    Welcome to our forum.

I am glad to hear that you have been referred to the breast clinic to see exactly what the problem is. We are normally seen within 2 weeks from the date of referral, but this can take a little longer at the moment due to the Coronavirus pandemic. On the whole breast cancer is not painful, so if you have been aware of this for the past 6 months and it is hard, you are just as well to get it checked out.

Sadly, cancer is no respector of age, so, although it is less likely to have it at 21, it is not impossible. The Covid 19 patients are being kept well away from cancer patients, although  some cancer scans and treatments have been put on hold for a while as a result.

This is always a scary time, when there are so many unknowns. I do most sincerely hope that nothing untoward is found. Only 1 person in every 8 referred to the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis, so the odds are still pretty good for you. You will get a few tests when you arrive at the clinic and, will then have an anxious 1-2 weeks wait for the results.

Do please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.  We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hey

Thank you for your message, that's really helpful.

I got my appointment letter today for Friday so will hopefully have more of an idea soon. I'm a bit nervous about going on my own but with COVID it's understandable. The letter says they aren't conducting imaging at the moment so I'm not really sure what to expect but I guess we'll wait and see.

    thanks for your support

    Hi DVLXX,

I am glad that you have got your appointment through so quickly. I suspect that most surgeons see so much cancer that they could almost diagnose cancer by a simple examination without any scans. Some are going straight on to surgery or to hormone treatment if this is appropriate for the patient, so if you do get a positive diagnosis, fear not. Something will be done to try and slow down any growth.

The restriction on scans was initially for 12 weeks and we are already well into that time, so this is not cast in stone.

I shall be thinking of you on Friday and hope that it all goes well.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello DVLXX just wondering how your appointment went? Hope all is well. X

  • Hi DVLXXX

I found a pea size lump on my areola and went to hospital for needle biopsy, I never heard anything so I presumed all was good.

Unfortunately,  I recieved a call yesterday to say they mislaid my paperwork and asked me to go today.

I was asked to take a friend, on arrival my consultant was very nice, too nice? X he did another scan in the room and said he has to remove it because it has grown in 8 month and now its prominent.

I go next Friday 3rd for a full removal he said he will know if it is the C word when they have a better look.

I am worried too, I hope all turns out to be OK for both of us xxxx

  • i have the same thing, but larger. could you tell me how this went? i am also young, younger than you, i am interested to know what the result of any tests you had were as i'm very apprehensive.

your description of your lump is by far the closest i can find to mine. mine is also visible from the surface, but not ON the surface, and it is a pale bluish colour sometimes depending on the light.

i am seeing a doctor next week.

would appreciate to know how this went for you, wishing you well
