2WW referral following smear

Hi everyone,

I am 24 years old coming up 25 and yesterday went for my first routine cervical screening. When the nurse did the smear she noticed what she thought was a slight prolapse on the left hand side. I have asked my GP about prolapse in the past, as ever since I had my son in November 2018, I get extremely painful periods and heaviness, a dragging feeling where I feel like my insides are falling out, but they've always told me it's normal.

The nurse arranged for me to see the nurse practitioner straight away, who examined me with a speculum. She could see what the nurse meant but said it wasn't prolapse and she had no idea what it was. She said she could only describe it as what looked like a varicose vein near my ovary but didn't know what it was.

She has referred me to colposcopy (I think that's what she said, it was a lot to process at the time), as an urgent 2WW cancer suspicion. I have been sick with worry since yesterday and I just can't put my mind to rest. Does anyone have any experience with this or know what it could be? I can't even do any research as I don't know what it is.

Thanks in advance for any responses x

  • Hello,

This must be such a worrying time for you especially as you are not sure exactly what you are dealing with and they didn't give you an indication as to what it might be. But it's great though that this will be investigated very soon and that you won't need to wait too long hopefully for your referral to come through.

I hope you will meet others here who have had a similar experience and that they will be along shortly to share their story with you. It's normal to be anxious but if you can try and keep busy and distracted and focused on other things and avoid doing any online research - Dr Google is known not to be very reliable! It won't be long now until you see a specialist and get some clarity on what this might be.

Keeping everything tightly crossed for you!

    Best wishes,
