Sore throat for 5 weeks

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone is well dyring this crazy time. I'm 33F and have been suffereing from an on and off again sore throat now for the past 5 weeks. I have no fever. My neck glands are swollen. At the beggining I was worried that I might have Covid-19 but then no other symptoms progressed. Now 5 weeks on I'm worried of what else it could be.  The throat pain comes and goes but for the last couple of days it has been really bad.  I have been doing the bad thing of using Dr google and this has completely freaked me out.

Usually I would go and see my GP but with the current situation they won't see me (understandable). I feel afraid and alone and I don't know what to do. My father is a GP in Australia so I have been sending him throat photo's but he says it's just viral too. But again can a virus last 5- 6 weeks? He isn't even sure. I would have great comfort if I was able to see an ENT, but I don't think that is an option in this current climate. Any advice would  be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  • Hi Holly, Just wanted to ask how are you doing now? Did you ever find out what was causing your issues and are you feeling better now?

  • Hi sorry to bother you but please tell me you resolved this or found out what was going on as I'm in pieces with this exact issue

  • Hi sussexmb

im also 6 weeks into a horrible sore throat - had ulcers too - treated for infection. Antibiotics did not help - then started on reflux medication. My throat has improved but it's still sore and swallowing is painful. My Gp said they've exhausted there avenues and is referring me to ENT. Just awful isn't it and totally consuming

  • Hey

Yeah I don't get it... do the glands under your neck swell and do you have the feeling of strangling tightness around your neck area

  • Yes I do have that strangling sensation and also glands are up - I have. Good days and then truly dreadful ones. - today has been bad - burning sensation in my mouth and furry tongue and the pain swallowing is horrendous- feel utterly helpless

  • Hiya,

just wondering how you all got on?
I am also having the same symtoms .. I've had a persistent sore throat for a while, I've been having ear aches also and been prescribed sprays that usually clear it up but now both ears feel blocked and my ears sometimes and ringing along side the sore throat. I seem to have red lumps on my throat but not with yellow or white puss just red blobs .. I do have a lump in my neck but I have had a fatty lump in my neck since I was young and assumed it's the same fatty lump. I'm going to try see the dr tomorrow but I'm just so anxious! I am a smoker but am quiting now due to the high anxiety! I tend to often get sore throats in the cold weather in the mornings but it goes away fast and assumed this was the same but it's been going on for way to long.

please keep me ups dated on how you get on!

  • Hi Mart,

I'm really sorry to read you are also suffering ! It's really awful and totally consuming -  I have an ENT appointment on Thursday - I will let you know how it goes. My throat is not as sore but it's still not right,  swallowing is still uncomfortable.
think I've bought every sore throat remedy known to man kind !!
I will keep this thread updated

  • I have to say I'm kinda relieved to find this thread I am on a similar one and amazed at how many people have the same issues.
I've had a sore throat and post nasal drip four times approx a week at a time since January.
Routine blood tests are negative but I don't know if anything sinister would show on these.
My mum died of oesophageal cancer so I'm terrified.
I'm a perfectly healthy 52f normally currently awaiting a further doctors telephone consult.
I hope everyone is doing well x

  • Omg me too . I think this is long covid. Is this normal to find a thread with so many having such similar symptoms? I started off two days after vaccine with irritation on soft pallet. Dry sinuses and dry throat and mouth. I’m 8 weeks on and dry mouth is relieved also irritated pallet has gone but still left with pain on left side of throat. It feels sore when I have gas building up otherwise atm it’s okay. The only thing which helps the throat irritation is gaviscon advance. Strange how many are suffering these symptoms and nothing is publicly reported.

  • hi hope your symptoms have eased by now. I think you are right. This is a real covid symptom. I had sore irritated throat - soft pallet area. It was eased with Gaviscon advance. It’s 8 weeks in and although my symptoms which doc put down to LPR have improved I am still having discomfort on left side of my throat. It feels like inflammation or scaring or a lesion which is getting irritated by certain foods or drinks, hence I am being careful with what I eat. Got referral for ent but getting an appointment is near impossible so may get doc to give me a private referral. Some days this condition is okay but some days it isn’t. Very strange that so many are complaining about this or very similar condition.
