Sore throat for 5 weeks

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone is well dyring this crazy time. I'm 33F and have been suffereing from an on and off again sore throat now for the past 5 weeks. I have no fever. My neck glands are swollen. At the beggining I was worried that I might have Covid-19 but then no other symptoms progressed. Now 5 weeks on I'm worried of what else it could be.  The throat pain comes and goes but for the last couple of days it has been really bad.  I have been doing the bad thing of using Dr google and this has completely freaked me out.

Usually I would go and see my GP but with the current situation they won't see me (understandable). I feel afraid and alone and I don't know what to do. My father is a GP in Australia so I have been sending him throat photo's but he says it's just viral too. But again can a virus last 5- 6 weeks? He isn't even sure. I would have great comfort if I was able to see an ENT, but I don't think that is an option in this current climate. Any advice would  be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  • Hi everyone, i am 60, female, generally very healthy, ex smoker, light drinker, healthy weight, still working f/t....I googled for '6 weeks sore throat' this morning and came upon this thread and was shocked (and very concerned) to find so many suffering in exactly the same way. Extreme throat pain sort of at the back of nose which is worse in the morning, mild ear ache, ringing in ears, occasional cough and dizziness. Two negative covid tests have eliminated that worry but so many people feeling the same does make you wonder what on earth is going on??? We should all keep posting updates to reassure others, I wonder how the original people are faring now? Haven't bothered calling the GP, they are overwhelmed, but going to spec savers for an ear test and saw dentist last week who found nothing scary. Good luck everyone, let us all now just how long it carries on for so we can have a little hope!

  • Hello, I had all

of these symptoms last year, sore throat for over 4 months, earache, swollen glands, sore tongue and mouth, tinnitus, feeling of lump in throat... I was terrified! got referred to ENT eventually  and was diagnosed with silent acid reflux. Was told Normal PPIs don't work for silent acid reflux. I was told to take gaviscon advance. I also spent a long time doing an elimination diet to work out my trigger s - they vary for everyone! Now don't eat later than 7pm, small meals etc Black pepper is a major no no. Also worked on stress management (meditation, yoga etc) My consultant said it was probably brought on by stress. I think I had covid just before this started but there was no testing back then. It might be the peri menopause too so going to get my hormones checked. Anyway I hope this helps some of you. It's worth looking into silent reflux as the cause as I would never had thought of it as being the reason for my symptoms! Now I'm symptom fee for the majority of the time unless I accidentally eat a trigger food or get very stressed.

  • I didn't consider reflux because the pain is at the back of my nose rather than the swallowing area. Was this the same for you?

  • Hiya

I was diagnosed with lpr silent reflux in November by ent. Prescribed double dose omeprazole. Didn't do much so stopped it. Currently have persistent sore throat and mouth full of white bubbly saliva all the time. Gp advised switching to lansoprazole! Debating what to do. As you say silent reflux doesn't respond to ppis!

  • Hello there, a problem shared is a problem halved, so thanks to everyone for sharing, and reminding us all we are not alone.  I developed a puffy throat, just where the double chin is.  I have had this on and off since December 2020, but now have it constantly.  Shortly aftewards i developed a sore throat with acid reflux.  I felt the acid burn, so i know i have that.  My glands are also up and swallowing is hard.  The heartburn has been undercontrol for 4 weeks, but my throat is still sore and under my chin is puffy and numb.  I have to sleep sitting up or my throat is worse the next day.  I am very stressed and tired from it all.  It i take a strong Anti inflammitory, then it improves for a few days and comes back again.  If it was only reflux i would have thought my throat would be better by now.  Does reflux cause a puffy throat??  Nearly finished my course of PPI (Esomprazole), and i will see if i can try some anti biotics.  Can you get a throat infection from reflux?   Thank you so much for reading this.  Please come back and let us know how you all get on, and what you tried.  My heart goes out to you all. xxx

  • Interested in what you said about IVF. I went through a round (unsuccessful) in Feb and I've had a persistent sore throat ever since....How are you now?

  • Hi I never really got to the bottom of it, saw ent had cameras down and ultrasound on lymphnode said it was reactive. They weren't worried so discharged me said possibly reflux. Had a few more rounds of ivf and now I'm pregnant at 14 weeks and it's stopped ‍♀️ So I guess we will never know. The lymphnode in my neck comes up from time to time. Good luck with ivf, it's tough but worth it x

  • I've got oral Lichen Planus, and my throat is often sore as is whole mouth and tongue.  That comes and goes with stress, it is thought to be auto immune in nature and affects more women than men.  They say that it's very rare in the throat, but I think it's more common than thought of, as I've registered with Lichen Planus UK forum.  Have you got any spots on body, eg red purple shiny spots around wrists that come and go or ridged fingernails.  It feels like my throat is on fire when I'm stressed.

  •  Am glad found this forum my throat is killing reading some these is it worth going to gp any suggestions anyone am on  the paracetamol and ibuprofen atm

  • Wow I have been trying to someone with the same problem As me for months!! I've felt unwell since end of January and have constantly had a puffy chin making it look like i have a massive double chin, I also had throat ache, pain when swallowing and feels like I have a lump in my throat. I've been on omeprazole for 2 months now and still no relief. The throat pain has stopped but still have the puffy chin and lump in my throat. My anxiety has been through the roof with it and I'm wondering if that's what's making my symptoms worse. How are u getting on I'm thinking of trying antibiotics aswell.
