Sore throat for 5 weeks

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone is well dyring this crazy time. I'm 33F and have been suffereing from an on and off again sore throat now for the past 5 weeks. I have no fever. My neck glands are swollen. At the beggining I was worried that I might have Covid-19 but then no other symptoms progressed. Now 5 weeks on I'm worried of what else it could be.  The throat pain comes and goes but for the last couple of days it has been really bad.  I have been doing the bad thing of using Dr google and this has completely freaked me out.

Usually I would go and see my GP but with the current situation they won't see me (understandable). I feel afraid and alone and I don't know what to do. My father is a GP in Australia so I have been sending him throat photo's but he says it's just viral too. But again can a virus last 5- 6 weeks? He isn't even sure. I would have great comfort if I was able to see an ENT, but I don't think that is an option in this current climate. Any advice would  be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  • Hi Chris,

Just looking through this thread when I noticed your recent reply. It seems that your still waiting for a definitive diagnosis for your throat and ear issues; I feel your frustration. I've also had reflux issues for 10yrs, but generally this has been minor without any other effects to my health. I've had a sore throat for the last 5 weeks or so; mostly on my right side, which initially came and went for the first few weeks, but has been much more persistent the last few weeks and I am now finding it uncomfortable swallowing and eating/drinking etc.

Not sure how quickly symptoms of a throat related cancer would worsen, but I'm feeling rather unsettled. I've had some blood work which came back normal, and have been waiting for the last 2-3weeks for an appointment with an ENT doctor, I've been told the waiting times could be upto 4months! Have you been seen by a specialist yet? Or have your visits/tests just been with your G.P?

Hope your feeling better soon, and have some more answers.

  • I had paint when swallowing on left side for couple weeks, then lost my voice and big pain, for more then a week. The voice came back but all neck feels stiff and swollen, small pain on the left side, sometimes itchy, no fever or cough, its like that for a month now, so strange never had that before.

Been to gp, had 2 different antibiotics, blood came back ok.

  • Hi

i had same problem it started in 2016. Though it was tonsillitis but after six weeks of the sore throat I thought it's something els. Drs weren't to helpful and said it's probably acid reflux. One dr said it's because I mouth breath while sleeping. A year later and the problem comes and goes. I bit the bullet and paid to go private. I had a consultation with an ENT specialist. Turns out I had a raging infection in my tonsil on the right side which could only be seen by having an endoscopy. I was  told it could possibly be cancerous but also told cancer is very unlikely. I had my tonsils removed (March 2017) at the cost of £4500 and that was the end of the sore throat's. Biopsy came back all clear. Long story short I had another operation 8 months after having my tonsils removed this was to remove a cyst on my throat which was likely caused by the infection of the tonsils.. this operation was done on the NHS. everything has been fine up until about six weeks ago the sore throat is back but now on the left side. Drs are a waist of time so I'll be paying for another consultation with an ENT specialist.

  • Hi

I am worrying myself sick at the moment as I have convinced my-self I have throat cancer it all started about 5 weeks ago when I had been consuming to much wine and had a buring pain in my tummy and kept feeling sick after eating etc so called GP who put me on acid reflux tablets and said if didn't settle I need to have a H Pylori test which I did and that was negative Anyway then my throat starts to play up and I found a small lump under my jaw and got an appointment on the 22/09 and she said I'm sure it's nothing but your throat is very red and that was weird as I had no pain so then she said I needed a scan for which I am still waiting for , I have now started to get severe burning on and off and now have little lumps at the back of my throat on the side of my swollen lymph node ! I said to her about it and she said it didn't look like anything other than swollen nodes on my tonsils .. I now have got a lump when I swallow and keep having to clear my throat which hurts but last week I had ragging eat and jaw pain and they put me on 250mg of fluflixicilon which had helped with ear but made throat worse and I feel they are not strong enough but hey ho and now I'm so anxious again as daily I'm noticing different things and I feel the longer I'm left the worse it's getting and I've given up coffee /wine /spine/toms and other things and making no difference .. I would love to hear if anyone has had anything like this ..

  • I'm in a similar boat as most people here and starting to suspect it may be related to COVID-19. Back in March, I ended up with the most horrible chest infection after seeing a patient with COVID symptoms. Since them, I haven't been quite the same.

Three weeks ago I ended up having a really sore throat. I put it down to tonsillitis or my asthma being bad, so postponed seeing a GP. A week later, the situation only gotten worse. Went to GP and got a round of antibiotics. Finished them on Sunday and got sent home from work because of my cough and suspected COVID, now waiting on test results. In the meantime, got another round of antibiotics from the GP.

I don't know what's going on, but my throat has been looking red and angry for weeks. I seem to be reading a lot of stories from people with similar longer throat infections. Will keep you posted on test results.

  • Crazy reading this and so many people with the exact symptoms I am having.

Maybe we have discovered some sort of lock down decease....

Settled my nerves seeing most people getting the all clear for the big C. Am on 4 weeks with this now, going to give it 2 more weeks before going the doc again (first was a phone consultation 2 weeks ago he suggested viral)

Keep us updated and stay safe!

  • Hi folks, I've also got the same symptoms, had since the start of the year and I often get a sore throat when stressed and tonsils flare up at least once a year so I thought it would go away, but it hasn't and now I can see my throat is inflamed on right side (which is the same side I sleep on). I've also had earache (both ears at different times) and pain at the lower back of the head, it almost feels like it is 'behind' the sore throat.  Swallowing has recently become painful. I'll be getting a GP appointment as soon as I can, as I've googled all the possible causes!

  • What a revelation finding this thread. I too was unwell the beginning of March, I thought it was a really bad flu! Coughing continuous, fever, sore throat, tight chest and difficulties breathing. I never sought out docs help as they always tell you to take paracetamol and rest. It lasted about two weeks but took me quite a while to feel like my old self. Never had a covid test but now thinking it might have been covid.

I've had an on going sore throat which now and again gets tickly and makes me cough. It was originally an on and off thing but now it's a constant pain at the base of my throat on the right side only with an on off pain in my right ear. Like most people here I've been thinking cancer.

I am going to speak to my doctor but it is a reassuring it seems a common problem and I'm not alone.

  • Hi guys,

Back in March I had no smell or taste for 2 weeks, maybe lnoger..I didn't get tested for Covid-19 because at the time it wasn't a symptom. Since then I keep getting a reoccuring sore throat along with light headed spells and armpit pain. In July I kept having a burning pain in my stomach and kept feeling sick after eating etc..so I called the GP who put me on acid reflux tablets. My sore throat is back..again and I have spoken to my GP and I am having a blood test next week. I just wondered how everyone else was feeling? And if anyone has had any answers?

  • Dear Help1234, I do hope that your sore throat has now gone. I can't begin to imagine how awful that must have been for five weeks. I came across your post after I had experienced extreme throat pain for 5 days. However I am pleased to say that on day 7 I am almost completely pain free. This is because I had phoned my GP (had to phone as the silly econsult system just referred me to 111) and had to speak to the nurse practitioner as the GPs are too busy (who prescribed Phenoxymethyl-penicillin). Three days after taking the penicillin she prescribed (and back-to-back paracetamol and ibuprofen) I was getting worse and unable to sleep because of the pain. The pain was just on one side and if you google Quinsy and look at the medical wikipedia page it describes the symptoms I was experiencing. Having read this I phoned my GP again in tears now and they gave me an out of hours locum GP appointment who referred me immediately to an A&E at a hospital that specialises in ENT (Ear Nose and Throat). They took lots of tests, and decided it was probably Tonsillitis not Quincy but gave me dexamethazone (the steroid that cured Trump of Covid), more Phenoxymethyl-Penicillin, Metronidazole and Dofflam throat spray as well paracetamol. Well a few hours later I was able to swallow without pain for the first time in six days. Hope this helps you and others. My advice is to keep phoning the GP. They are not just there for Covid patients.
