Sore throat for 5 weeks

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone is well dyring this crazy time. I'm 33F and have been suffereing from an on and off again sore throat now for the past 5 weeks. I have no fever. My neck glands are swollen. At the beggining I was worried that I might have Covid-19 but then no other symptoms progressed. Now 5 weeks on I'm worried of what else it could be.  The throat pain comes and goes but for the last couple of days it has been really bad.  I have been doing the bad thing of using Dr google and this has completely freaked me out.

Usually I would go and see my GP but with the current situation they won't see me (understandable). I feel afraid and alone and I don't know what to do. My father is a GP in Australia so I have been sending him throat photo's but he says it's just viral too. But again can a virus last 5- 6 weeks? He isn't even sure. I would have great comfort if I was able to see an ENT, but I don't think that is an option in this current climate. Any advice would  be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  • This has weirdly given me a bit of comfort.  I've had a sore throat for 6 weeks now with what the doc thinks is oral thrush.  However after 3 efforts to get rid of the thrush over 4 weeks, I am now being treated with antibiotics.  I have gastric problems to with acid reflux.  It's really annoying.  I've been told that if the sore throat doesn't go with the antibiotics then I'll be referred to ENT. Thought I was on my own clearly not.  Sounds like the antibiotics probably won't work sadly.  We will see what happens

  • Hello all,

I have also had similar experiences. At the start of lockdown around 28th of May I was laying in bed a noticed a swollen lymph node just above my right collarbone. Used doctor google and then scared myself, on a positive note it was tender but the tenderness was not all the time. The next day I had a bit of a sore throat but seemed to come and go (mostly felt sore in the evening?). The lymph node went down a little bit over 3/4 weeks but was still quite large. Saw the doc who just felt the lump and said: "We will get that scanned for you". Didn't look at my throat due to Covid.

2 weeks later I had an ultrasound which showed that single lymph node still enlarged so while there they did a needle biopsy to check for Lymphoma. 2 weeks later that came back inconclusive so the ENT consultant said best to remove it for a biopsy to get a result. Had that removed with an urgent referral week later (2 weeks ago). Also had a COVID test as the hospital I was to have the op at was a COVID free one. That came back clear.

Still waiting for the results for that. (Try not to think about it too much as it just creates a lot of worries) But all the way through this that on/off sore throat has lingered on and I figured out it was coming from a red area in the back of my mouth, on the soft pallet to right located in front of the tonsil and also had what looked like a cyst on the tonsil that side. I mentioned it to the ENT while I was there having the lymph node removed but he said there looked like nothing concerning there but also took a biopsy of the tonsil cyst too. (Think he's just focused on the lymph node). Thinking it may be a bacterial infection? At no point been given antibiotics? I'm kinda hoping this is the reason the lymph node was swollen....  Not sure whether to wait for the results or speak to my GP.

    Oh I'm a 38yo male. :-)

  • Hi,im in the same boat. Has a red throat for last 5-6 weeks. And my tonsils are swollen. My GP told it could be because of refliucs. Im taking tablets, but not getting better at all :/

  • Did anyone get any answers to this?
I'm in the same boat, reoccurring sore throat for months, one swollen tonsil and tiredness.
had blood tests and all clear, waiting on call back from dr tomorrow and hopefully referral to ENT.

I had a round of ivf in March so assumed it was to do with all the hormones but it's still there and all I do is scare myself with google

  • This is exactly what I have. One side of back of throat and ears playing up it went away for about a week then came back. No temperature no coughing bar once every few weeks tickling throat prompting huge coughing fit. Could this be some strain of Covid related virus?

  • Same here, sore throat 5 weeks, prescription for acid reflux. No change. Doing blood test tomorrow, then chest x ray then ENT referral depending on results. Worrying.

  • Hi this probably won't help but I have had a really sore throat swollen glands and dry mouth now for 6 months !! I had a cr scan done and it came back abnormal I was rushed in for tests all done super quick and was told it could be the dreaded cancer by the ent consultant BUT since my ultrasound I've heard absolutely nothing back in over a week. So I'm guessing it must not be ? I think we are just left to guess our own results these days huh I think there is something going on, because so many people at the moment have got these mysterious sore throats that won't go away ??

  • You might be right. I did not expect all these replies to be recent as I too have been suffering from the same symptoms since July. I had a covid test which came back negative. So now I'm even more confused to what it could be. It started off with loss of voice and red sore throat and a fever for 3 days. Then I thought I was recovering and the sore throat came back again this time with a cough (which is what prompted me to do the covid test). Now I have developed an ear ache with blocked ears and nose and the sore throat is still there. It's been like this for 4 weeks now and the situation with the Gp in this climate is a mess. I also been very dizzy and my lymph nodes in my neck and underarms have been swollen the whole way through these symptoms. It's frustrating when you think you're getting better then your symptoms keep coming back. But I hope we all find answers and I will ring my Gp and see what can be done.

  • Hi guys

I to have been having the same symptoms sore throat for 5+ weeks now, left sided neck pain and about a weak ago I started with  armpit pain left side, I cant feel a lump  and occasionally I get abit of ear pain but it doesn't last long, I've done at least 4 covid tests since this started and they all came back negative. I called my dr who gave me a telephone consultation and said it was probably viral and he wasent concerned as it was normal he also put out there that he thought I could be going through perimenopause I'm only 33 but my mum started as the same age I am now, I'm not totally convinced though but after googling it does confirm that these symptoms could be from menopause. At the end of may I had a chest mri with contrast and chest xray which all came back normal, I had blood work done when I attended a and e a few weeks ago due to something different and they were all fine aswell. But something is clearly going on and it's starting to worry me as nothing is easing I just keep developing new symptoms

  • Hi have been the same for the last 4 months now sore throrat redness at the back of my mouth with some sort of red spot on the left side my tonsil swollen glands in the left side under jaw I have also been feeling fuzzy headed  I have had 3 lots of antibiotics 2 lots of antifungal tablets blood tests chest xray ent appointment witch told me its acid reflux witch I dont think it's that as I have suffered with that for 10 years I just dont know what to do its very worrying
