Sore throat for 5 weeks

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone is well dyring this crazy time. I'm 33F and have been suffereing from an on and off again sore throat now for the past 5 weeks. I have no fever. My neck glands are swollen. At the beggining I was worried that I might have Covid-19 but then no other symptoms progressed. Now 5 weeks on I'm worried of what else it could be.  The throat pain comes and goes but for the last couple of days it has been really bad.  I have been doing the bad thing of using Dr google and this has completely freaked me out.

Usually I would go and see my GP but with the current situation they won't see me (understandable). I feel afraid and alone and I don't know what to do. My father is a GP in Australia so I have been sending him throat photo's but he says it's just viral too. But again can a virus last 5- 6 weeks? He isn't even sure. I would have great comfort if I was able to see an ENT, but I don't think that is an option in this current climate. Any advice would  be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  • Hi ! Yay that's good good I'm so happy you've had that good news. My ultrasound was clear too. No need for biopsy. I have a appointment this evening at 4.40pm to see a ENT dr at the hospital. I am so so so worried my anxiety is bad today. Hopefully tonight I will find out all is okay! X

  • Oh Good luck! Please let me know how you get on! Sending you all my best wishes. Hopefully this will be the end!  xx

  • Yeah I do hope so!!! It's going to be a long day, I've been waiting and waiting for this appointment for weeks. Hopefully all is good and that's the end of that. X

  • Hi Help1234,

Just wondering how you are doing and how everything went with the ENT appointment. Hoping it all went okay xx

  • Hey, how are you both doing now? I came across this forum as I've had really similar symptoms for the past 6 weeks :( the left side of my throat has been hurting on and off and it's mainly when I swallow, put my chin on my chest, yawn, move my neck in certain angles etc. It's causing me serious anxiety and my gp has told me to try some ear drops and see how it goes - there's not even anything wrong with my ears! Xx

  • I am in the same position - I have had a sore throat, enlarged tonsils and glands, itchy ears etc. Since end April.

It started off with what looked like strep throat. I have suffered with my tonsils from a young age so am familiar with symptoms but following two lots of antibiotics through May I am still suffering with the sore throat, neck and furry tongue. My swab results came back yesterday  as no further action required which has made me nervous.

    im hoping it’s just viral?!

  • Thanks for the response, it was interesting reading these posts yesterday as it seems that a lot of people have V similar symptoms. It will be interesting to see what the covid test comes back as but at the same time worrying as how people could you have infected in having this if it is over the last few months?

The virus is constantly mutating and effects people differently this is why my GP has sent me for the test but I also will be having bloods & urine done once the paperwork arrives.

Hoping that you all feel better soon - it’s a long and exhausting slog.

  • Hello everyone, I'm another one that has had similar sore throat symptoms - for over 2 months now. Discomfort in throat, swollen lymph node in neck and achey underarms. Slight ear ache too.  Over the past 2 months, a couple of times the symptoms have gone away - but each time come back 7-10 days later.

I've had a course of antibiotics (didn't help) and my blood tests came back all fine. My GP's best guess is acid reflux so I'm trying Gaviscon advance for the past 10 days or so but to be honest I've never had reflux issues and I find it hard to believe it is that.

Interesting to hear the previous poster had covid. Seeing increasing reports of people saying they had mild covid symptoms but then struggle with the after effects (such as a sore throat and achey glands) for weeks and months after.

Hoping we all overcome these symptoms soon!

  • Hi, this is the first forem I've ever joined but reading your symptoms I thought I had to reply. This sounds exactly like me, although I didn't get tested for Covid-19 but I had all the symptoms back in March, they seemed to go after a couple of days but I keep getting a recurring sore throat along with light headed spells and anxiety. The more I read about Covid-19 the more I keep finding similar stories. Thanks for sharing, hope you get well soon.
