breast screening telephone consultation

hi guys. has anyone had a telephone appointment with the breast doctor since this coronavirus happened?

a bit about me.... im 32 . my breasts have been quite lumpy since i had my children. 4 and 3 yrs old. but last year i noticed some 'proper' lumps come up in my left breast. i was planning on going to the gp about them but then ended up with a suspected cancer referal for an ovarian mass and found out i had high prolactin so i put the lumps to the back of my mind. (i read that high prolactin can cause breast lumps so i just decided to keep an eye on it) anyway gynycologist isnt that worried about ovarian mass but need more tests for all the extra bleeding im having . so anyway i noticed that my breast lump was getting bigger and then noticed a dimple so went to the docs 2 weeks ago and saw the nurse. she found 2 lumps in my left breast and then found another in the same place in my right one. she said because its bilateral she wasnt that worried and would put a normal referral through to breast clinic.  then lockdown happened so thought i wouldnt hear off them for a while. then Thursday i had a phonecall and the specialist will be phoning me to discuss my lumps on tuesday and we will go from there.....

has anyone had a telephone appointment for this before? i have no idea what to expect ‍♀️

  • Hi bethan98,

While I can't directly help with this, my reply here will boost your post so more people will see it and if anyone has any similar experience then hopefully they'll be along soon.

Try to make a note of anything you'd like to discuss with the specialist so you don't forget. Equally make notes of anything they say so that you have all the information.

I see it's not too long now until the appointment so I hope it all goes well.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hello..I had a breast consultation by phone last week.i was referred to the breast clinic under the 2 week wait at the beginning of March..unfortunately the referral was not sent so once they realised it had been almost 6 weeks.

The surgeon called and asked my symptoms etc and explained the risks of attending hospital at the moment. He decided the benefit outweighed the risks so I had an appointment a few days later.

I saw a surgeon for a breast exam and as I had a mammogram less than a year ago they only did an ultrasound. It was just a large cyst and they drained it the same day.

The breast clinic were asking people to attend appointments alone and the chairs were spaced out so people arent too close.

I'm already a cancer patient (not breast) so my experience may be slightly different to yours.

Best wishes and if you have any more questions feel free to ask

  • Thankyou for your reply they phoned this morning. to be honest I feel a bit fobbed off. she said  that because if my age its probably a cyst and that she will send out an appointment and ultrasound after all this is over. and gave me a number to ring if the lumps get bigger. even though 1 of them has grown from pea sized at christmas to grape size now

  • Hi ,

I went for an appointment last week at our local hospital. I fully expected to be in and out in half an hour if I'm honest . I had had a sore nipple for a few weeks but wasnt too worried but thought I should get it checked out. I fully expected to be in and out of my appointment in half an hour if I'm honest , however , I had 4 mammograms and 3 biopsies as the radiologist found a lump behind my nipple and said the glands in my armpits are swollen , which came as a shock to me as I have pain or swelling in my armpits whatsoever.  That was last Tuesday and I am waiting for a phone call today with my results. I am absolutely terrified and it has been the worst week of my life .

I am keeping you in my thoughts and hoping we all get good news

  • Hopefully you wont have to wait too long for your appointment.Drs should not be telling people they are too young to have cancer.I was diagnosed with primary liver cancer at 35.

Keep an eye on the lumps and if they do change call the number they gave you and insist on being seen.

Cancer services are not allowed to just stop due to the current situation.

  • Hi did you get on OK with this?

I went to hospital week before last after going to my Drs with a lump. I had an ultrasound and a biopsy. They rang me Wednesday to say I have an appointment on the 9th but I got my letter to say its a telephone appointment. So I've sort of made the assumption im OK?

  • Hi everyone.

i posted about this in april. i am still waiting to be seen. almost 9 months. i have made several phonecalls to the breast clinic etc as i have had more changes in both breasts and a 2nd dimple has appeared. i just keep being told to wait for an appointment.

today while scolling through facebook an mp in wales had posted about hospital waiting times and to contact him if anyone was affected. i emailed him and had a reply straight back. my case is being taken straight to the health minister. hopefully i will hear something soon

  • Hi Bethan. I am in Wales. From referral it will be nearly 4 weeks to my appointment. I can't believe how long you have waited. Hope you get your appointment soon
