Persistent Sore Throat

Hi,

I've had pain at the base of my throat on and off since around December. In the past month, it seems to have gotten worse. I also noticed a small enlarged lymph node above my collar bone, that has now been there for about a month and a half. I have been to the doctor and she looked briefly at the back of my throat with a torch and felt the lymph node. She said it was swollen but didn't think it was anything to worry about and was unrelated to my sore throat. About a week after my appointment I decided to look at my own throat and found my tonsils were enlarged and had white spots on them. I hadn't looked in my throat before as the pain was at the base so I didn't think I would see anything so I'm not sure if they've been there before. I've been gargling with salt water after meals for a week and my tonsils are less enlarged and throat pain has decreased A bit, although it is still there. I still have ear pain and the lymph nodes on the other side of my collarbone, aswell as one under my chin have become swollen. I'm not sure if I should go back to the doctor, especially with covid going on. Does anyone have any advice?

  • Hi AW02,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to read about the issues you've been having recently. As your doctor says, these symptoms may not be related to each other. However if you're concerned, keep an eye on things and note any changes. If anything persists or you remain concerned, you can always make another appointment to discuss this and to talk through any changes you've noticed.

I hope you feel better soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hi/

I would definitely get this checked out as it's gone on so long, may be nothing but if it is then early diagnosis is beneficial. Good luck.

  • Hi AW02,

my wife has had similar symptoms since Christmas, especially sore/painful throat and white lumps.

The doctor diagnosed thrush and suggested eating less sugary things including fruit.

Perhaps try this and see if it helps. Look up candadiasis.
