Suspected skin cancer

Over the past two months I have had a mole turn into a crusty red lump that bleeds heavily daily. I consulted with an online doctor and provided photographs of this lump, she said it looked very sucpicious and to make an appointment with a dermatologist as soon as possible  Obviously this has got me very worried and i'm even more worried about not being able to see a doctor due to coronavirus. Will a doctor still be able to see me? Am I within my rights to still ask to see a doctor as I just want a lump checking out? I don't want to sound silly but there's a history of cancer in the family and really don't want to put myself through it,

  • Who was the 'online doctor'? Were they at your GP practice or someone you found on the internet? The reason I ask is because your GP practice would make the referral to a dermatologist, not ask you to make an appointment yourself. You can't make an appointment with a NHS dermatologist yourself - it has to be a referral by your GP. Only a private dermatologist can make an appointment without a referral. Private appointments are great if you have health insurance or the money to pay for the consultation. Otherwise you need to make an appointment with your GP.

At the moment most GP's are doing telephone appointments & then asking the patient to send photos of the mole to them. They will then assess whether it needs a referral - either a 2 week urgent referral or a non urgent that may take a few months.

You definately need it checking out so contact your GP & get the ball rolling. It will take longer than usual but get it checked & then you will have peace of mind. 75% of people seen by a dermatologist for dodgy moles are given a clean bill of health so there is a good chance the skin under/around the mole is infected. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)

  • It was someone I found online as I didn't think much of it I just wanted to get someone to look at it. But because she said it's very suspicious looking it got me concerned. Thank you for the reply and all the information I am going to ring the doctors today :)
