Worried I have Skin Cancer

Hi Everyone

Last July while I was on holiday in Greece I was badly sunburnt on my left shoulder. Treated it the usual way and didn't think of it again until mid November I noticed an unusual mole on the same shoulder.

It is irregularly shaped compared to my other moles and a bit darker but it's quite small only a couple of mm in length and width and does not appear to have got any bigger. I can't say for sure if it has always been there and has changed or if it is new as to be honest I never paid much attention to my moles.

I eventually went to my GP in February who referred me to Dermatology however due to Coronavirus my appointment was cancelled

Today I had a virtual appointment where I sent pictures to the people at the dermatology clinic and received a reply saying they want to send me for a punch biopsy to remove and look at this mole.

Is this bad? Does having a punch biopsy mean it's more likely to be serious ? I am a worrier at the best of times but this and the current Coronavirus situation has me very anxious.

I will probably talk to someone on the phone on Monday but if anyone has any advice it would be appreciated.

Thanks

  • Hi,

I'm sorry you have this worry, especially at this difficult time. It's good that you have managed to get your mole looked at by dermatology via photographs. However, dermatologists can't always tell if a mole is benign or cancerous by just looking at it, either with the naked eye or on a photo, so they need to ensure they are making a correct diagnosis by way of a biopsy.

The problem is that some moles can look dodgy but they are in fact benign so a biopsy is the only foolproof way to tell. So don't think that it means your biopsy automatically means it's bad news. A large percentage of skin biopsies come back benign so hopefully yours will be the same.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)

  • Hi

    Thank you for your reply.

I was trying to think positively however I just received a phone call about 15 mins ago asking me to go to have this mole removed on Wednesday morning of this week.

I was a bit to taken back to ask many questions on the phone but do you think this is bad ? A phone call to have this done less than 48 hours later doesn't seem good to me although it could be standard procedure for urgent referrals I don't know.

I will try to remain positive and will post after my appointment on Wednesday.

    Thanks

  • I had this mole removed today so it's just play the waiting game now. I was told it could be up to 6 weeks potentially longer due to the Coronavirus.

Will try to keep busy and positive in the meantime.

  • It's good it's been removed so quickly. Hopefully you won't be waiting too long for the results & I hope they come back clear. Please let us know how you get on,

    Angie

  • Hi Everyone

Good news I received a letter today telling me my mole was aytipical but not cancerous. Very relieved and grateful.

I hope anyone who reads this in the future knows that even if you are convinced your mole meets all the criteria of cancer and I certainly was , that you can have a positive outcome.

Thanks for the advice and best of luck to everyone here.

  • That's wonderful news Calum. Thank you for letting us know because it helps those going through the same worries to know that it's not always going to be melanoma.

Keep safe & get back to enjoying life now,

    Angie

  • Hi

I'm 17 and I've had moles all my life. Recently, however, I've become an extreme hypochondriac and I cant eat or sleep due to worry. One mole on my shoulder looks slightly bumpy and is a small but raised but has only itched once when I was on holidays last year. Another is on my calf and is dark in colour. The final one I'm worrying about is also dark (all my moles are as I'm not very pale) and it looks like a skin tag but a bit bigger, coming off the skin quite a bit on my back. None of these have significantly grown, or bled or anything. Recently had routine bloodwork done and everything came back fine (I dont know if skin cancer would show up in bloods) but I just made an appointment to see the doctor over my moles on tuesday. I'm so stressed and I keep thinking the worse. What bothers me is how long I've had the moles!

  • Sorry for the long post, to be clear, these moles have been there since early childhood and have normally evolved. My appointment is tuesday morning and I absolutely can't stop stressing!

  • Hi Calum,

Real good to hear that you have the all clear.

  • Hi Karen,

Just read this after answering your other post, and am glad that you have an appointment to see a doctor. I know that it's a very worrying time for you. Do you have a good support network that you can call upon?

I hope that it's good news for you.
