Lumpectomy yesterday

Hi there

I was told Wednesday I had breast cancer after my biopsy and mammogram the week before I'm 34.

Yesterday I had the lumpectomy and some lymph nodes removed .surgeon said it had gone well and removed a small lump and think the lymph nodes felt ok but nothing can be certain until under a microscope.

She mentioned chemo and radiotherapy....was all a bit much to take in having only found out on Wednesday .

Has anyone ever had same situation where they said was a small lump and what treatments happened next?

I'm a rollercoaster of emotions just now one minute I think everything will be ok then I remember it could easily not be ok ,it's going to be around 2 weeks before answers .

    Hi Hayleigh.....so sorry you find yourself on this forum....it's the one no one wants to join but now you're here you will find lots of support.

    My daughter was in the same position as you exactly this time last year and myself the year before.

    Until they've analysed everything they can't tell you what will follow. Once all the results are in a treatment plan will be worked out specifically for you.

    Both mine and my daughters treatments were different. I know my answer doesn't go into much detail but it's best not to speculate until all they have all the answers.

    Keep yourself busy and the time to your appointment will soon pass.

    Here's hoping any further treatment (if any) will be minimal.

    Hi Hayleigh,

    Welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry to hear why you're here. I know that it is all rather surreal, when everything happens so quickly. You have been lucky not to have to wait too long for results. The tissue removed in your lumpectomy will be sent to pathology, where they will ensure that your surgeon has taken a clear margin around your lump. They will also examine any lymph nodes that have been removed and be able to tell you whether these are clear or not.

    As Irene said, treatments vary from person to person. What happens next will depend on your general health, the grade and type of breast cancer you have. By the time you next see your surgeon, she will have discussed the pathology results at her MDT (multi-disciplinary team) meeting and, should be able to tell you what treatments they recommend.

    Chemo and radiotherapy are options, whilst other people are given hormone treatments. However, not everyone responds to hormone therapy. Your surgeon will also have tested your tissue to find this out. It may take a little longer to get these results, but these will decide what treatment is best for you.

    Rest assured that it is all quite manageable, even though it feels as if everything is happening so fast. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 10 years and have had a lumpectomy and a double mastectomy, but I am still here and living a fulfilling life.
