Hi there, I'm 24 years old and had an incisional biopsy on the left side of my tongue on Wednesday morning. This is day 3 of what I didn't expect would be such a difficult recovery. I'll explain my experience so far, perhaps it matches what other people have experienced, but I'm also quite inexperienced about what all of this could mean so I would appreciate any advice please.
the biopsy was to remove an ulcer on the top of my tongue that wouldn't heal for a few months. The procedure was very quick and took around 10 minutes, the surgeon removed just under 2cm of my tongue.
About 30 minutes after the procedure on the way home, the stitches gave out and the wound opened, so I went back and had it closed again. Had this happened to anyone before?
I think the wound may have opened slightly during the night of my first sleep all though it looks as if it had closed itself by morning and it wasn't bleeding. I have 4 stitches in it.
On day 3 the wound appears to still be closed and healing with no sign on infection. I've been wearing a mouth guard to stop my teeth irritating the wound.
I have had a lot of trouble eating, i managed to eat half a yoghurt today on the right side of my mouth and that's the first form of food since the morning of the surgery. I'm terrified of eating anything incase I iritate the wound and cause it to open again.
I have also been rinsing gently with salt and water regularly and taking some painkillers when I feel a need them. On a scale of 1-10 the pain and discomfort is around a 4/5 but the hunger is horrible.
i am also finding it very hard to talk normally, is this due to the sweelling and is this normal?
Sorry for all of the questions, I'm just not very sure if this is normal and or if I should be worried. What is the normal recovery rate for being able to talk again and eat semi-normally again? I know it's early days yet but I'm just quite unsure about all of this
Many Thanks
