Sore lymph nodes- I’m scared!

Hi everyone, my name is Holly and I'm 16. I've been having a lot of problems with my lymph nodes lately and I have awful health anxiety which is making me feel rotten!

I've had sore lymph nodes in my neck for a few weeks now, sometimes achy and tender to the touch but not swollen. My sinuses and throat have also been a bit achy and I've had blocked nose and headaches on and off which could be a cause, but about two weeks ago I found a lump behind my left ear which worried me. Pretty sure it's a lymph node, and it's very soft and quite movable, and hurts if I press on it for too long. I don't know how long it's been there, but I've also had some random stabbing pains in both ears but no sign of infection. What's bugging me is that I had an awful ear infection as a child so the node could well be still swollen from that, and I do remember having lumps behind my ears as a small child- but having health anxiety, I've latched on to the negatives and convinced myself I have all sorts of cancers.

I had a sore node in my left armpit a few weeks ago which went down after a few days, but it's flared up twice again since then. A few days ago, I also found a painful one in my groin, which is still there but not as painful, although I do have two boils on my upper leg and I believe these could be the culprits, as I have a faint memory of this happening before.

They all seem to be on the left side of my body, which is odd because since Christmas I've been having muscle cramps and spasms on my left side as well as nerve pain- my parents think it's fibromyalgia as I have most of the symptoms, including concentration issues, IBS and mental health problems, and if it is fibromyalgia it could affect my lymph nodes- which would be a huge relief, but as I'm so young it is also unlikely.

I can't bring myself to go to the doctor because of how bad my anxiety is, but it's killing me to stay at home and I can't stay away from Google!! I'm so unbelievably stressed and this is affecting my life so much, I just wish I had a magic spell to make it all go away! It's so odd :(

If anyone has had any similar experiences or can offer any words of wisdom, it would be greatly appreciated if you could share!

Thank you,

Holly

  • Have you seen your doc yet? It's been a while

You are young, please try not to worry and think the worse, if you havent seen doc, please go, you do feel better after seeing doc.

  • Not yet no, because of the coronavirus I'm quite scared to leave the house :(

I'm planning on going if the lump behind my ear is still there after the lockdown has been lifted, as the rest of my lymph nodes feel better but I've been having some soreness in my ear.

  • Hi Holly

Please don't let covid make you scared to leave the house.

There is a lot of scaremongering on the mainstream news.

I was in a room with  half a dozen medical staff today, near me, caring for me and I am TOTALLY confident that I will not catch corona.

I would much rather go and get checked for reassurance regarding cancer than worry about corona.

Meanwhile i am sending calm vibes.

  • Hi, thank you for the calm vibes!

You're right about scaremongering- the news has been so ridiculous lately! It's totally uncalled for, and I've realised that this shouldn't stop me from seeing my doctor.

I've decided to finally make an appointment with my doctor after easter, because I've been spending my time worrying when everyone around me is relaxed and I'm missing out on the fun!

This does feel like a very big step for me to take because of how anxious I've been feeling, but I'm just trying to stay calm in the mean time and reassure myself that I'm doing the right thing.

I'll keep you updated- I hope you're well and I hope you have a lovely Easter!

  • Thanks [@holly1963]‍

How did you get on with doc?

  • Hi,

I just got back from the doctor and she said the node behind my ear isn't big enough to be classed as "worrying" and thinks the swollen glands may be caused by post nasal drip and allergies.

However, she said at this stage she would have done an ultrasound to make sure everything is okay but because of the coronavirus situation she isn't going to do one? That's worried me to be honest, I don't see any reason why she shouldn't :( She did say to go back in 2/3 weeks if it's still there (which i'm sure it will be) and she'll try and book me in for a scan then.

I feel a little bit better but still very worried! I'm determined to get a scan!

    Hope you're well,

    Holly

  • Hi [@holly1963]‍

Sorry your GP would not allow a scan because of coronavirus however it is good that they have asked you to go back in 2 to 3-weeks.

Is my mouth lump my doctor diagnosed an ulcer inviting me to go back in 2 to 3 weeks if it was still there which it was, I got a biopsy during the coronavirus period and I'm just waiting for the results now I don't blame you for not giving up on a scan I hope that your doctor does let you have the scan in 2-3 weeks but more than that I hope the lumps and worries have gone away.

  • Hello,

Thank you so much for your well wishes, I hope your biopsy results are good! Do you know when you'll get them back?

I hope your mouth is okay and you're not too stressed about it!

  • [@holly1963]‍

The surgeon could not say when results would be back, cancer research nurses said that would be because of delays due to the coronavirus, I have myself the screen name hope2bcancerfree as a way of being positive. Someone on here said I think 90 per cent mouth scans benign so that gives me hope.

  • [@Hope2bcancerFree]‍

I've heard that 90% statistic before too :) I'm glad you're staying positive! Hopefully now that everyone is staying indoors this coronavirus issue will be over soon and you can get your results back quickly :)
