Skin cancer diagnosis

I had a biopsy 3 weeks ago to determine the type of skin cancer I had and how the dermatologist wanted to proced.

In these uncertain times with the spread and fear of coronavirus I am not sure if I will hear any time soon.  I know if left it will spread. What's a suitable time to pursue with hospital?

I know they have a lot to contend with at this time so are encouraging everyone to not bother the health service.

  • Hi,

The virus is causing a heavy workload for clinicians, however, anything that is cancer related is still being dealt with within the usual time frames (other than some treatments where patients are having slight alterations to their treatment plans).

I'm assuming that they didn't give you any indication as to how long your results would take to come back? Most hospitals have an average 7 week wait until the results are available to the patient. Some hospitals send the patient an appointment for 8 weeks after the surgery, to give them time to receive the results. If they are received back before then they then rearrange the appointment for an earlier date.

If you weren't given a time guideline & told how you would receive the results, I would contact the hospital next week (after a 4 week wait). Hopefully they can then give you an appointment or an indication as to how much longer you may be waiting. Ring the consultant's secretary if you have their number (they can sometimes be found on the hospital website).

Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)

  • Thank you Angie for your reply. I feel more reassured now and will call in another week.
