Possible Stomach Cancer

Hey lovies,

Some background info, my dad has been unwell, originally it was thought his hernia was the cause of some of the issue. After being dismissed by two doctors, I insisted that he go back. He saw a different doctor who decided to do bloods. He was then fast tracked to a specialist to have an endocopy within 4-5days. The endoscopy found a mass inside his stomach, in additon to the hernia on the lower esophagas. He was advised he is on the cancer pathway & would require further investigation to determine the nature of the mass. He was told a CT & EUS was booked and that a biopsy would likely be needed but not to worry he wouldn't have to do anything and he should hear back soon.

Over a week later an he hadn't heard anything. He then received a letter saying the hospital had tried to get a hold of him. He contact them today, & was prompted to leave a message. He then had to ring multple numbers to receive differing answers ... 1) a CT is booked but not until Apr. 2) sorry we have no appointments on record for you & then lastly, sorry we have no idea what a EUS is (endoscopic ultrasound). He's now awaiting a call back from someone else tomorrow to try and help him understand what is actually going on.

Suffice it to say, this isn't exactly puting minds at ease. Is this a common experience? The initial fast track seemed to go well, but since then everything seems to have fallen apart & considering a mass was found it's even more concerning.

  • Hi Lexii,

Your experiences is somewhat similar to my nans back in November 2019. She had been to GP for 'MOT' and they said had low Iron levels, this was the case for the past 2/3 years. GP sent her for ultrasound and cameras up and down. They found mass in her stomach and was told it was possibly cancer, but they would need to carry out CT scan. She was booked in around 4 days later for CT and received results only one week later, found out she had cancer of the stomach, which had got quite large.

Fast forward to now, she's almost back to normal life after having around 70% of stomach removed on 29th November 2019. She has just turned 83 and has made an impeccable recovery and only spent 5 days in hospital! Had her first check up just last week, all good.

In all, I would say your dad should contact his GP to ask them what is going on and if they could contact the hospital to let them know..? I would also call the hospital first think to remind them, I know they are busy but the fast track should be continuing, seen as the mass was found.

I hope this helps and I wish you and your dad all the best :)

    Liz

  • Thanks Liz, that was also my thought. It would make no sense to fast track & then let things drag out after, especially after finding a mass.

My dad's quality of life is slowly being impacted, he's had to take a lot of time off over the last 3 weeks due to food not settling, causing sickness & difficulty sleeping. He has other health conditions also, diabietes, thyroid, blood pressure problems. So needs to be careful with ensuring he's able to eat correctly and not fast for long periods.

He's the sole earner for their household and his company doesn't cover any sick pay. Both he and my mum aren't the pushy types, so I have to sometime nag a little and remind them that they should speak out and ask questions.

  • I think in this instance they are going to have to be pushy. As you say no point fast tracking and then slowing down. I don't know your situation but maybe you could support them giving the hospital a call? It sounds like he has a lot on, but needs to ensure he's looking after himself.

    Best wishes.

  • After several calls he's now received  another letter. This is for the CT scan but it's also over 3 weeks away & the letter no longer mentions anything about fast tracking. My dad is calling his GP back again although he's said for the most part they don't seem to care all that much.

With COVID-19 the GP surgery is closed so he has to try and get through to them when he can. He still has no appointment scheduled for the EUS. :|

I'm over 155 miles away so I can only do so much; make sure they have all they need at home etc. I also have a cough at the moment so wouldn't want to risk passing it on. It's all very frustraiting.
