3rd colonoscopy fail

After an 'enhanced prep' over seven day period, I attended my 3rd colonoscopy appointment yesterday. Unfortunately, it proved unsuccessful, & I've been told today that there's no other test available to me through the bowel screening service. A colonography was their only other alternative, but in my case, it still wouldn't help due to blockage.

I have spent most of the day experiencing serious disappointment, frustration, & anxiety. My poor family, who have been so wonderful with their support, haven't known how to deal with my floods of tears & occasional outbursts!

I'm now being discharged by Bowel Screening, & need to see my GP about if & what next step is taken. There has to be a reason for blockage if aggressive laxative preps plus an enema haven't worked! Maybe I'm overthinking & getting worked up over nothing, but it's the 'not knowing' which is difficult. Also, it can take several weeks for a DRS appointment, & then however long it will take for further tests (whatever these may be)!

Has anyone else been in similar situation? Sorry about my rant & seeming so full of self pity - hopefully tomorrow, I'll have a stronger resolve to move forward.

  • Hi there

I'm so sorry you are having such a hard time getting the test done. A few years back I couldn't have a colonoscopy because my weight was too low and they said the prep wouldn't be suitable so I had a CT colonoscopy instead which they said is better than nothing. I think they should at least offer you that. I didn't have to do any prep. I also had a bowel MRI which is also another option. Like you I suffer with severe constipation and am always backed up. Is the CT version an option or do they insist you are empty beforehand? With mine they said it's fine to have no bowel prep

  • Thanks so much for your reply.

At the minute I don't know what will be offered, as Bowel Screening had spoken in person to the Director of Services.  He says that the service is limited by the tests they provide, & in my case they aren't suitable.  Now up to GP deciding what the next step is.

  • So they wouldn't proceed with colonoscopy because you hadn't completely emptied? From what I've heard that prep is very strong and if you're still having issues that needs to be investigated. I hope they can offer you a scan at the very least

  • Prep was not pleasant!!

7 days low residue diet, on 5th day 6 senna + picolax.   6th day fluids only with 1st dose of moviprep. 7th day fluids only with another moviprep.  Day of procedure, I had an enema on the unit prior to colonoscopy.

Colonoscopy was prolonged because they did their best to find clearings through colon, but after 35 mins they had to give up!! I'm rather sore & emotional today, but hopefully, will feel better about it all tomorrow! Will definitely be pressing for further investigation as something is wrong.

Wishing you well with your ongoing battle too.
