Worried mum

My 18 year old son found a lump under his arm, he has private health insurance. His GP sent him for am ultrasound as the lump was growing.  He assumed it would be a straight forward ultrasound but while he was there they did a needle biopsy.  He had the results of this in 10 days and the biopsy was benign.  We were surprised at his meeting with his consultant she said they were going perform surgery under general anaesthetic to remove the lymph node.  The consultant spoke to us after the operation to say they had removed 2 large nodes from deep in the armpit.  She said they were testing them for lymphoma.  This was not what we expected to hear.  Looking back my son is always tired, finds it hard to gain weight and is constantly getting coughs and chest infections, that take ages to clear.  We have to wait 2 weeks for the results but I sm fearing the worse.  Any advice appreciated

  • Hello Athlete and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear that your Son is undergoing some investigations at the moment. It's understandable that you're concerned about what the results may be and we know that the waiting can be a particularly difficult time.

It sounds positive that there was nothing of immediate concern picked up in the initial biopsy and hopefully you won't have to wait too long for the rest of the test results.
I wonder if you might find it helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses in the meantime? You're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm). I'm sure that they will be able to offer some support and reassurance.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
