Post Menopausal Bleeding

Hi All

Just looking for some advice on ovarian cancer/womb cancer - I'm 47, been through the menopause already, but recently started bleeding.  I've been to the GP's and off for a scan next week.  I've always been upto date with smears  the last one being approx 14 months ago - has or is anyone in the same boat as me or something similar?  I know it may not be cancer, and hoping not.  I know there are 4 stages to the cancer, how quickly can it develop to stage 3 if you dont know you've got it? Months or years?  Thanks for any advice given, take care all, Mel

  • Hi

my periods stopped at similar age to you but I had a bleed a year later and another a year after that. I had scans and blood tests and eventually they found polyps on my ovaries. They removed a couple but one was quite tricky and so they took a biopsy instead. I was convinced i was going to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer  ( my sister died of lung cancer just the month before) but the biopsies showd the polyps were benign.

i know it's trite to say 'try not to worry' but really, it just isn't a foregone conclusion until or unless they give you the diagnosis so try your best just to put it down until you get your results back. Many many people will have the same symptoms without having a diagnosis of cancer so keep strong if you can and try not to think about it too much.

    Best of luck, Carol

  • Hi Mel

I'm 53 and have just been to the GP due to post menopausal bleeding.

I'm worried sick that I've got cancer and cant get the thoughts out of my mind.

I'm so sorry to hear you are going through the same thing.

My smear in Sept 19 was clear and I have no immediate family history of gynecological problems but it's a trying time.

I hope things turn out to be ok for you, given that most feeds on this forum are positive I'm hanging onto the facts that it's usually nothing sinister in the majority of cases.

    Best wishes

    D

  • Hi Carol

Thank you for your post it has gone some way to making me feel better.

I'm currently awaiting my scan and hysteroscopy it's not till 20th March. I'm so anxious and unable to focus on anything else.

I've had blood tests only yesterday. Fingers crossed I dont get a phone call from these.

So pleased you are ok after going through much the same thing.

Can I ask what other symptoms did you have along with your bleeding.

    X D

  • Hi Mel

I had 2 bleeds last year in August and September. I didn't really have any other symptoms to be honest although perhaps the usual pre-menstrual headache, tiredness, chocolate seeking was there before the bleeds. I was so convinced it was cancer that when the poor doc gave me the all clear I cried all over him in relief!!

Wish you the very best and sending you strength, try to think about the 'what if nots' rather than the 'what ifs' - there really is a strong chance this isn't cancer and nothing good comes of opening the door to all  the panic.

Keep well and let me know how it goes

    Carol

  • Good Evening

Thanks so much for your reassurance. My mind is racing and I know it wont stop till the 20th when hopefully as you say it wont be as bad as I'm expecting.

Will keep posting my updates as I think they will help others.
