Pelvic pain getting worse with new symptoms

Hi everyone,

I am 19, soon turning 20 and I have been going through absolute hell with this pelvic pain. Every GP I have seen has no clue as to what is causing me this severe pain on the right side of my pelvis/abdomen.

It's been localised in that specific area but has now shifted all over the pelvis to the left. It does mainly hurt my right lower side. Every time I had gone the pain had been blamed on recurrent UTIs but when it was sent off to the lab it had come back as normal. I have been hospitalised due to the pain and in the end they have concluded it was a kidney infection and sent me home with antibiotics. I do have flank pain and kidney pain in my mid back which does intensify at times. Pee is dark brown at times and cloudy.

I have pain every time I have sex and recently have been having unusual bleeding for days (watery and dark brown discharge) despite my period not being due for another week. I've seen one good doctor in A&E who had pointed out that the pain is situated in the right ovary and that I need a gynaecologist not a urologist. Pain comes and go and can be crippling at times, making me nauseous and cry at times. My mum is so worried and she has booked a private gynaecologist appointment tomorrow. GP has agreed to refer me to urologist and gynaecologist since this condition has been happening for more than 8 months and is getting worse. They have sent me for an ultrasound in november but  it had come back normal. I think that either nothing was detected due to its early days or that it is not a good diagnostic tool as it cannot capture certain diseases such as endometriosis clearly (what the A&E doctor has told me). This A&E doctor has suggested things like endometriosis and cysts but ultrasound back in November didn't show anything according to GP.

I've been on co-cydromol, codeine and naproxen for the pain and been prescribed numerous antibiotics which have not helped at all. I have researched my symptoms and they are all consistent with cervical cancer, ovarian cancer and uterine cancer.  I know I am young but there are many cases where women my age had turned out to have cancer after having similar symptoms to myself. They have not done a CT scan or any biopsy etc. Only a poo sample urine culture and blood tests which turned out fine.

I am booked to see specialists such as gynaecologists and urologists. Hopefully they can help. Has anyone had similar experiences? The underfunded NHS is ruining my life and affecting my job, my uni degree and my sex life. It is like they are waiting for my condition to become life threatening for them to really probe what's going on. I've been having a high heart rate at times (140bpm in the hospital) and palpitations with chest pain. All comes and goes which makes this so baffling.
Thank you for taking time to read this xx

  • Hello Katrina123,

I hope that your private gynaecology appointment went well and that by now you have a few more answers than at the time you wrote your post. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting to see these specialists.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Katrina,

i had really similar issues when I was your age (I'm 24 now) and after pushing my GP a good 4 or 5 times I was referred to a gyanoecologist who disgnosed me with endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain. I'm no medic of course but your symptoms do sound similar to what I had/what I still unfortunately get but be sure to get the right diagnosis!

drop me a message if any questions x
