Hysterectomy for Suspected Leiomyosarcoma - too extreme?

After having a contrast MRI pelvic scan my consultant gynaecologist told me that one of the fibroids in my uterus looked very abnormal, showing high contrast readings compared to the others.  I also had urgent CT abdomen,  pelvic and thorax scan with contrast which was clear,  as well as an ovarian cancer blood test and others which again were clear.  Even so the MDT and SMDT discussed my case and has deemed the fibroid suspicious and recommended a hysterectomy.  I'm absolutely stunned as they have not actually given a definite diagnosis,  but the consultant said they wouldn't risk wanting to take a biopsy of the fibroid as the needle could burst it and spread the cancer to surrounding tissues. They say this but at the same time can't confirm it is cancer.

I do have a number of fibroids and previously asked about a myeoctomy or uterine embolism but was told that both were dangerous and not appropriate as I have multiple fibroids.  I feel paranoid and that they're using the abnormal fibroid argument to just go down the traditional route of a full hysterectomy when there  could be other options.

If I have the hysterectomy and they found that nothing was wrong then I would have gone through all the stress, a major operation and premature menopause for nothing.  Im still deciding what to do.  Is this normal, to have surgery for "suspected" cancer without solid proof? They're not telling me I have cancer but at the same time saying that I would be going to a specialist hospital to have the hysterectomy by a sarcoma team.  Would appreciate some help understanding this or if anyone has had similar experiences.  I'm so worried,  stressed,  upset and confused about it all.

  • Hello Girlagogo
I'm sorry to hear about everything that is hapenning for you at the moment. I can see from your post that you're confused and conflicted but it's natural that you want to make the best decision for you regarding your treatment.

I think it might be helpful if you called and spoke to one of our team of nurses who will be able to chat with you and answer some of your questions. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 and I'm sure that they will be able to offer some support and information.

    Best wishes,

  • I rang and spoke to one of the nurses and she was really helpful in answering my questions.

Update is I decided to have the hysterectomy which will be a total abdominal one and going in for the operation on the 16/3 but now just at the general hospital. The last few days has been a real emotional rollercoaster. I'm really scared about having major surgery and keep getting upset thinking about the recovery and what a biopsy might find.  Of course then the results could take another couple of weeks or so.  The pre op assessment nurse said that my records read "+/- ovaries" which means that my ovaries could be removed if during surgery it was found that something was wrong with them because cancer isn't always detected until then.  Yet the blood test for ovarian cancer was clear so I don't understand why they would then be different when looked at. Is that possible? I'm worried about consenting to their removal and them being taken because of surgical menopause.

I've been feeling more fatigued over the last month and worse this last week to the point that my back muscles start feeling achey when I sit in the office at work and I can't seem to focus on anything for long. My mum thinks this is down to stress but could it be a symptom of cancer or of it spreading? I constantly feel "off" , like having the flu, lacking in energy and just not myself. I'm so worried that since having the last CT scan a month ago that any cancer that wasn't picked up before might now be showing because of me generally feeling worse than before.

The waiting and wondering is awful and I think that if I feel this tired now, how will I feel after the hysterectomy. All my blood tests have been clear so far but yet I'm feeling unwell.

  • Hi

I know it's been a while but how did everything go after hysterectomy?
