Skin biopsy

I had a skin biopsy more than 10 weeks ago and still no results, does anyone know why it is taking so long. Is the time being taken any indication that it may be good news. I developed a new pink/ red mole that crusted. GP told me about amelanotic melanoma as well as other skin cancers. GP fast tracked me. I  saw the dermatologist within 2 weeks, he said it was not a basal cell carcinoma when I asked (my dad had one) but did not know what it was. I got concerned only when he asked to feel my lymph nodes. The following day the mole was removed.

Is no news good news, and has anyone else waited this amount of time.

  • Hi Hamilt,

Have you been in touch with the consultant's secretary to ask about the delay? 10 weeks is far too long for results - at the moment the average wait is 6 weeks. The delay could be due to the hospital asking for a second opinion from another histology department - this sometimes happens if the tissue taken isn't showing 100% sign of benign or cancerous cells. Or It may simply be due to an admin error or a letter has been sent that has been lost in the post. Give them a ring & I hope you get them through soon. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

Yes I have been in touch with the secretary she is telling me patholology is currently taking 10-11weeks, probably didn't help I had my biopsy over the festive period 22nd December. I am being told nothing has been sent to the hospital from pathology and to phone again next week.
