Swollen Left Ovary

Can someone kindly advise as I'm very worried. Having left sided back and pelvic /groin pains for over two weeks. Had a CT scan done to rule out kidney stones but it showed an enlarged left ovary (4cm) instead.  Gynaecology saw me and advised if is due to ovulation  and hormones and this should normalise after three periods.  However  the pain has got worse and persisted.  CA125/AFP was done which was normal.   I haven't had an ultrasound scan yet.  :(

  • Hi I was just reading and your symptoms sound so similar to mine. Did you have any tests and results yet?
mine is right sides however I had to have a hysterectomy and was only left with my right ovary. I've always had little niggles in my right side which I put down to either my endometriosis or pcos however since around 6 weeks ago I get this awful pain in my right side and it hurts all in my hip and lower back it's so bad that even when I sit on the toilet it feels like I have a really bad dragging feeling all in the right side of my abdomen. I spoke to my gynaecologist who has sent for an ultrasound scan to rule out an ovarian cyst. I'm worried as if anything happens to that ovary and I have to have it took out I'll then go into menopause at 38 years old that's not something I want.

  • Oh goodness. I hope your surgery went fine and that you are okay. X

  • Hi 1993grl

i was very lucky my first mass in Feb 2020 was over 14cm and was a serous cystadenoma but benign.  I knew straight away things had started to change again after my op and luckily gynae checked for me as they had to leave a tiny part of ovary that was stuck to bowel.

They found another massive mass so I underwent major surgery with gynae and bowel surgeon in November and luckily they save my bowel which they didn't think they could.  Again I was lucky and it was benign I'm now on luperoelin injections to make sure the hormones don't allow any remaining cells to grow.

  • Oh my goodness I am so glad your okay now and they have given you medication to prevent anything else happening.

I'm so sorry I found your post last night after searching lower left ovary pain.

My left ovary pain started a few months after I had my contraception implant out in 2019.

I had an internal vaginal scan last year which the results were an enlarged left or right ovary. (I can't remember which). This pain had been blamed on ovulation.  Because I have pain and increased vaginal dc. Sorry if tmi.

(I don't have periods on my own as I have pcos and bloods have shown I don't ovulate. )

The pain would last anywhere for a few days for 30 days. I'd say more discomfort than pain. So then the pain vanished.

This year I had to have a HSG test in January to check for any blockages. Then about a week or so later the pain started again so I rang gp and was told take painkillers and ring back if I still have it after the weekend.... So I rang back on the Monday and told them and she refered me for an internal scan.

I went for the internal scan and she was really nice and told me she couldn't see anything that would be causing the pain.

I spoke to another gp yesterday who told me that nothing showed on my scan and she believed that my pain is groin pain.

I told her I didn't believe it be groin pain as I have had it before and this pain compared to that pain is totally different and I do have an enlarged left ovary (I think it's that one). I told her that the HSG test has irritated something in my system.

I just hate it when you feel like that you aren't believed because they can't find the problem and your made to feel like a mad woman. Or it's this this and this.

I think my problem is because the GP that was dealing with everything retired so I have just been given random GPS who clearly don't note read.

I think I'm going to just stick to speaking with 1 GP and my gynecologist consultant.

I'm so sorry for posting all this on your post.

  • Please keep on at GP as it needs looking into I'm not really up to date with pcos and if that could be the cause. My gynae has been brilliant since he did first op and really is taking care of me now.

    good luck x

  • I will do but don't want to keep having test after test and nothing be found and them to think I'm making it up

It's hard when nothing is found.

Not that I want it to be. I just want answers.

Especially keep ontop of anything gyne cos I lost my nan to cervical cancer.

I need to decide on 1 gp and stick with them I think so I'm not mixed up with all different ones.

  • I see my gynecologist in about 12 ish days. So will see what he has to say. X

  • Hiya, did you get to the bottom of this? I have pcos and had a cyst removed last year. I was getting sharp stabbing pains again so went for a internal scan today and she said my left ovary is just inflamed but didn't know why it was causing me pain or why it was inflamed? Xx
