Thymus Cancer diagnosed

I have had surgery to remove a mediastinal mass, there was a tumor on my thymus. I has open surgery and the rugby ball sized mass weighting two Kilo was removed in one piece. It had been attached to my heart, windpipe, lungs and cavity wall.  The surgeon said it all had been removed and they took fine pieces off the organs it was attached to and a pleural biopsy to see if the lung is cancerous, all scans etc leading up to survey were clear except for the mediastinal mass.  Has anyone experience of this cancer. I'm now gone after major surgery but don't see the consultant for ten days yet and as it stands in expect ing the worst. They are giving me chemo as a mop up precaution. It's so hard being positive but if anyone could shed some light. Am I terminal? Does complete surgery and removal cure this?

  • Hello Katies1983 and welcome to the forum.
I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. It sounds as if you've been through a big surgery but it's positive to hear that your scans prior to this raised no concerns.

Cancer of the thymus is rare and unfortunately I can't see that we have any active members on the forum who have the same diagnosis however lots of our members will understand how difficult the waiting for answers will be. Hopfully your Consultant will be able to answer all your questions at your appointment next week.

We have some information on our website here that you may find helpful and if you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses then you can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,
