Worrying Time...

So I joined this forum a few years back when my elderly mum had breast cancer, and then had a secondary agreesive lump form on her neck. And now I am here again, as my husband has just been fast tracked to have a colonoscopy and gastroscopy next week on possible bowl/stomach cancer.

For many years he has suffered from peroidic bouts of acis reflux at night. Years ago our then useless Dr gave him Omeprazole (10mg) which he has taken daily ever since, (and which generally helped - until the last couple of months.) More recently (the last couple of years) he has also had occasional upset stomach (diarrhea/ sickness) This became more frequent after xmas and so he saw a new Dr in January who did blood tests and pooh tests. The blood came back as low in iron, with a positive result for helicobactor pylori. (He has 2 lots of antibiotics to start after the hospital appt) And the pooh had traces of blood (he'd not noticed anything) All this, plus his age (50) meant the doc has done this fast track appointment.

After searching on Dr Goolge (who doesn't these days?!) we are of course terrified that all this is pointing to a bad outcome. He feels tired all the time and generally just not ok. He feels bloated and is getting almost constant heartburn now. We want to know what is going on, and get it fixed, but at the same time terrified of what they may find.

I suppose I just wanted to know if anyone else has suffered similar simptoms to his?

Also, I know they may take biopsies away to be tested, but do they tell you straight after the colonoscopy/gastroscopy if they can see anything that is bad? Only the hospital paperwork says 'to help keep the dignity of the patients, we ask family/friends to not stay - we will call you to collect when they are ready to leave'. - But I would not want him to be on his own if they were to give bad news....

Thanks in advance for any responses given xx

I'm sorry to hear that your husband has some heatlh problems which have meant that a referral has been needed. It's understandable that you're feeling worried.
These days many people will consult "Dr Google" about symptoms they may be experiencing and whilst there is some good sound information available online there is also a lot of inaccurate and inappropraite information. Searching Google for symptoms will almost inevitably lead to "worst case scenario" information which will only make you worry more. So my advice would be, for now, give Google a wide berth until you have firm answers from the Consultant and then stick to reliable sources of information.

From the posts I've read here in the past the way information is relayed to the patient can vary. And of course you're right that any biopsies that are taken will need to be tested. What I would say is that when you take your husband I'm sure that when he books in the two of you could ask that if there is any news that they are able to give on the day that they do that when you are together. I'm sure they would understand.

If either you or your husband would like to speak to one of our team of nurses for some support ahead of his tests next week then do give them a call. They are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,
