Lump on neck, hospital admission...

Hi all, I'm feeling slightly concerned, a couple of weeks ago I started to feel tired and was struggling to even cycle to work and have been suffering from back pain which led me to see a chiropractor.  I then developed weakness and shoulder pain. Previous to this I have a history of severe infections and recently developed alcohol intolerance (strange neck and back pain with vomiting when I drink even small amounts). Thought nothing of it but then a couple of weeks back a large lump appeared on my neck (it's big, 6cm and very firm, not movable). No cold symptoms or any obvious source of infection.  Wasn't too concerned but visited doctor on Monday. She said the lymph node is large then she checked me over and seemed concerned as I had a very elevated heart rate and lethargy/muscle aches.   She made me go straight to hospital , I really didn't want to go, thought it would be a waste of time.

At hospital they checked me over and agreed I had an unusual and large neck lump which they didn't think looked like a normal swollen lymph node. They did blood tests which showed a few different markers which showed my body is fighting something.  The duty doctor insisted on keeping me in overnight to put me on IV.

They also wanted to scan the lump but never did this (I just wanted to get home ASAP so never questioned this). With IV treatment they managed to get my tachycardia improved although still had a low grade fever and elevated levels in my blood.

They let me leave hospital but advised that if that lump is still there in a couple of weeks, then I must go back to get a biopsy. I'm thinking the lump is likely some  reaction to infection and not cancer but not still slightly concerned..., the lump has been very painful during the night as it's pressing on a bone and putting a lot of pressure on that area.   I'm hopeful that the pain means cancer is less likely??? I've been getting horrible fevers and last night woke up with my whole body shaking and sweating.

Does this sound like a normal infection or something worse???  The main hope I have is that the doctor told me that due to the lump being painful, it's more likely to be infection rather than cancer.?? Should mention that I'm also currently being treated for high grade pre cancer cells of my cervix, Had LEEP procedure but my abnormal cells have returned so been referred back for that.

  • Hello Nevey33

I was sorry to read about the health problems that you've been dealing with over the past few weeks. It's understandable that you're feeling concerned about what this lump may be.

If things haven't improved then do go back to your GP who will be able to arrange for any further appropriate tests.

I hope that things improve soon.

    Best wishes,
