Urgent Tongue Biopsy cancelled Last Minute as Doctor Sick

Biopsy on my tongue was booked for today at 12 so I've not eaten and bathed etc, hubby has booked day off work to take me. Hospital rang just as we'd set off for the hospital to cancel as the doctor has phoned in sick. I'm so upset as I've been up all night worrying and my mouth is so painful so I'm desperate for a diagnosis and to start treatment. The 2 week guidline for urgent referral last day is today and now I don't know how long I'll wait for another appointment.

Has anyone had this happen before and how long should I expect to wait for another appointment?

Thanks

Shelly

  • Hello Shelly,

This was really unfortunate I can totally understand why you are upset and that you need to have a diagnosis very soon. I hope you can get another appointment very quickly. It might be worth ringing the hospital and explaining that your biopsy was cancelled due to the doctor being sick that day and asking whether they can tell you when your biopsy will now take place.

I am keeping everything crossed for you that you get seen very soon and that this time there will be no more unexpected cancellations!

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Shelly ... I was just wondering how you are getting on. I have sent you a friend request . Hugs Ginny.    X

  • Hi Ginny

I've just got in from the hospital and have had the biopsy. They say the growth is large and causing some obsrtuction of the airway so they advised I may have to have a Tracheotomy but thankfully it wasn't the case. They initially said results in 2 weeks but then I was given an appoint at ENT for next week so really worried.

Thank you for asking and I'll accept your friend request now.

  • Hi Shelly,

I stumbled across your post while trying to look for people going through similar.

I hope you are ok and will recover quickly from your biopsy.

I have had a lingering pain on the left side of my throat for a while now and also chronic earache on the same side. Been to docs but they say they can't see anything obvious. Haven't been referred to ENT yet. I also now have neck pain on the same side.

I just wondered what your symptoms were and what they felt like? I hope you don't mind me asking but I'm starting to get frantic and don't know what to do.
I assume a GP can't see the base of the tongue and that needs to be checked by ENT?

I hope you have a peaceful night and get some answers soon.

  • Thanks Casca,

I started with a mild sore throat on one side before Christmas, the pain came and went every few days but grew stronger so at the end of January I went to the docs who referred me for an Endoscopy. I also had pain in my ear on that side. The pain is bad some days and not others now.

There they found a lump and I was referred to ENT who said the lump is base of tongue and that I needed a CT scan which I had last week and the biopsy today.  They also said I need an MRI scan and that they suspected another lump around the corner from the one they knew about so no idea where they mean and obviously really worried.

Hope you find that you're ok and feel free to message me anytime.

  • Thank you so much for replying.

So sorry you are going through this. I pray you get positive results. The waiting must be awful.

Im terrified of going to the doctors but I know I'm going to have to. I've not even told my husband.

Will be thinking of you x

  • Please go to doctors and get it checked and referred as doctor cannot see everything. I really hope it's nothing and will be thinking of you too.

It's hard to tell hubby's and mine is distraught, it's all happened so fast. I never go the doctors and considered myself fit and well.....all changed only 5 weeks ago.

I will add you as a chat friend if that's ok?

    Big hugs

  • Thank you Shelly. That would be great.

I've taken up enough of your time so go and rest and take care x

  • Hi Shelly,

im currently waiting on my urgent referral off the dentist to get checked for a lump that's based on the back of my tongue/base

could you tell me about your experience and did you find out if you had cancer or not? I'm so worried as I'm only 22 xx

  • Hi Holly

So sorry to hear this, hoping that your lump turns out to be harmless. I realise just how worrying you must feel right now but take some comfort from the fact that's it's unlikely to be Cancer due to your age.

Yes , I was diganosed with a tumour on the base of my tongue and I had Radiotherapy last year. My scan after treatment shows no evidence of disease so fingers crossed that it stays that way.

    Lots of love
