Afraid of Sedation

Hi,

I have been referred quite quickly to the endoscopy team, to have a colonoscopy and endoscpoy with biopsies taken.

Ironically my fear isn't over the procedures themselves, or the outcome of the results (although remind me of that in a coupe of weeks!) however it is the fear of being sedated.

I am quite comfortable to the concept of general anesthetic, as I know it will just knock you out completely! But sedation somehow seems more daunting.

I am very much a person who needs to feel in touch with their surroundings, not in a hippie way - more to feel grounded with my environment (maybe I am a bit Hippie) I don't enjoy yoga or meditation, often I find it makes me panic more as it makes me feel more distant and spacey.

idk, has anyone else had nerves over their procedures sedation?

  • Hi

I've had a number of endoscopies under sedation and I get very nervous about medical procedures, I even fainted having a cannula fitted for the procedure. To me with sedation I certainly didn't feel out of it at the time of the procedure, I remember being very aware and thinking the sedation hadn't worked, however it's almost like it erases most of your memory of it and I felt slept sleepy afterwards.

you can always opt not to have the sedation but I prefer it with. Good luck x
