Found a lump in my armpit and really concerned.

I have found an oval shaped lump in my armpit and it is quite big. I have not noticed it before so I was really panicked when I saw it. I went to the GP today and she said to wait six weeks which I really can't see myself doing. She then said she didn't know what it was! Has anyone had something similar to this as I wondered if it was a lymph node enlarged. I am even considering going privately for a biopsy as I can't wait six weeks.

  • Oh tell me about it, 46 here and it seems like one thing after another! I didn't know that about mammograms so the information sharing works both ways. Yes will keep in touch and best of luck with it all!

  • dont worry too much, easier said than done but i made myself ill when i found one under my arm, i kept reading hard immobile lumps in the armpit were a bad sign so i diagnosed myself with allsorts!.....i finally plucked up the courage to go to the doctors and she said it was just a ingrowing hair thats caused it, even deodrant can cause lumps! she said it would go down after a couple of week and it did! thank god! never felt so relieved! im sure urs will be fine too! x

  • Glad you were ok and it went down. Yes when you look at the internet searches they do seem to show the scariest scenarios and it is hard not to worry. I am going to see another doctor tomorrow as I feel like I can't wait six weeks which was what I was originally told to do.

  • Yes same age as me. Thank you I will let you know what my next doctor advises. Seeing one tomorrow.

  • Last Summer I found a lump in my right armpit, I left it for about 6 weeks because I hate going to the doctor and was scared stiff.  I was fast tracked within two weeks.  Mammograms, proved lump nothing sisister and right breast clear.  However they found extensive calcification in my left breast, so I had to have a core biopsy, thankfully this turned out to be innocent.  Hope that my experience might make you feel a little less anxious.

  • Thank you. That is good to hear things were fine for you. It is a worrying time. I saw a consultant yesterday and he said it isn't a lymph node and that none of my lymph nodes are enlarged which is a good sign. He has referred me to another hospital for a mammogram and ultrasound next Tuesday afternoon and I will get the results the same day. It's my first mammogram and wish I had been having it without already having a lump as it has increased my worry about what they will say. Hope it's ok and trying to keep my mind off it until then.

  • The worry and waiting is so very hard to cope with, the actual procedures are the easy part.  No point in me saying don't worry, that would be calling the kettle black, but wishing all the best and I'm sure that all will be good.

  • Thank you so much. Let you know how it goes x

  • I had my mammogram and ultrasound today after finding a lump in the middle of my armpit. very pleased to say everything turned out to be fine. The lump was just muscle tissue below the bone in the middle of my arm. I am relieved and grateful to everyone who was kind and came on here to message me. Thank you so much.
the specialist also said that he recommends having a mammogram from 40 years of age then every year or 18 months. I couldn't wait for my NHS so have had to pay for mine but it was worth it for peace of mind. The mammogram was £198. Hope this helps someone.

  • Cath, I am so happy for you!  Sharing experiences, helps so much whatever the outcome, and your  post will give much comfort to others who are going through anxious times xx
