Scared after ultra sound

I had and ultrasound of my kidney cyst last week and 2 days later I had a phone call to say a lump had been found on one of my ovaries. I need a 125 blood test and gynae referral. I'm trying not to worry but I've had this brick soreness in my tummy for some time and went to gp with this a d had a colonoscopy last year. Does anyone know if it will be a 2 week referral as the practitioner didnt tell me. Thank you

  • I have just been to GP with tummy pain last week and my ca125 has come back 618 which is very high.  I was given a red flag appointment and am being seen 7 days later by a gynaecologist which is tomorrow.  Hoping they will do an ultrasound.  Did your ultrasound show up anything unusual?  I know how worrying it is waiting for results.  I wish you well.  (Hugs)

  • Hi, hope it all goes well. They found a cystic Mass on an ovary. I dont know if its 6mm or 6cms. I was in shock as the ultra sound was for my kidney.. ty

  • Hi just to say that cysts on ovaries are very, very common and most of us will have one at some stage, and usually they don't cause any symptoms so you don't even know they are there. I had one recently I wouldn't have known about except I was having an MRI for something else, and it was noted on the report. Mine was 2.5cm. And then I missed a period which I realised was probably because of the cyst. So at least I knew what that was about.

Anyway, it's good that they are checking your bloods and have referred you to gynae. I'm not sure if it will be a 2ww thing or not - that doesn't sound enormous, even if it's 6cm. I think they have to investigate anything over 5cm. So that might be why you have had a referral. But a lot of cysts do get to that size and are still harmless. And they can cause pain, and bloating, and sort of period pain - I could feel mine sometimes once I knew it was there.

Try not to worry too much, wait and see what they say - they might want to do a further scan, perhaps U/S or perhaps MRI, just to see whether it looks like a simple cyst or something more complicated. Often even the ones that aren't "simple" (i.e.nothing interesting inside, just fluid) and appear to have a solid component inside them are harmless too - you can get various different sorts, and they are strange things, but it is far more likely to be benign than malignant.

Let us know how you get on x

  • Thank you for your reassurance, just never had a phone call 2 days after a scan before.

  • Yes that's bound to freak you out, I'd be thinking the same thing, but often these things do go through quickly and it's just protocol to investigate.

From what I know - and bearing in mind I'm not a doctor - it's quite difficult to tell all that much from an ultrasound, as a cyst will just look like a very dark thing without any echoes, though it might show something solid inside which could be why they have called you back.

That doesn't mean it's cancer, as I said there's dermoid cysts, all sorts of odd ones you can have - and it might just be because of the size.

Anyway I hope that you get some reassurance soon x

  • Hi, I've heard from the drs it is a fast track appointment. It is 6cm pelvis mass. My stomach is so big I think it's going to explode answer soon I hope., x

  • Ohh, well, it's good to have more information I suppose. My mother has had loads of cysts around that size, she still has to have them monitored. I hope it is nothing scary.

  • Hi all, just an update my Ca 125 was normal at 12. It is a loculated cystic structure of 6mm they have found in my pelvis. My appointment for gynae is the end of March. So I'm waiting to see what happens next. It was downgraded to routine but I'm still worrying as I know a ca 125 can be normal and it still be suspicious even though I know its probably ok. Donna

  • Oh that's really good news that they have downgraded it. I'm glad to hear that - also, 6mm is better than 6cm! And brilliant that your CA125 is normal, too.

Loculated means it's got different areas of fluid in it, which might be why they wanted to investigate further, but it doesn't necessarily indicate anything bad as is clear by the fact they have taken you off the urgent list. Cystadenofibroma springs to mind as a benign example (not cancer). These are really common.

Hope everything goes well from here on in and thank you for updating, it's good to read reassuring news. I'll be interested to know how it turns out and of course if you feel anxious then do post again, we are usually around to listen.

  • Ty I put size down wrong it is 6cm. That's why I think I should still be 2 week wait.
