CGIN Biopsy or LLETZ?

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I'm seeking guidance to make sure I don't make any mistakes in my chosen approach to treatment.

I had a call to book in for a colposcopy with LLETZ treatment this week just gone, following a smear test in late January. I didn't receive anything about the results via post beforehand. I simply got a call whilst in work to say I needed to come in for a colposcopy and treatment at my local hospital.

I attended the appointment but decided against jumping straight to LLETZ and instead opted for biopsies to be taken. During the colposcopy the consultant advised that I have a very small cervix, so I did feel somewhat relieved that I'd decided against LLETZ, as I am aware this can remove quite a substantial amount of tissue.

I should receive the results back for the biopsy within the next 3-4 weeks, but I can't help worrying if skipping LLETZ was the right thing to do?

I decided against LLETZ as I suffer from endometriosis and I have read that cervical endometriosis can be mistaken for cancer. I'm not sure if this is correct and the consultant didn't seem to know anything about this correlation so she couldn't advise.

I am under the care of a different hospital at their BSGE Unit for my endometriosis and I'm currently on the waiting list for a MDT surgical approach to treatment, due to the extent and severity of disease.

The consultant I saw at my local hospital for the colposcopy is the same initial person I saw when I received my endo diagnosis last year. I was originally fast tracked due to suspected ovarian cancer which an MRI scan showed to be extensive endo. This consultant is a general gynaecologist, not an endometriosis specialist. They offered a laporoscopy with ablation, which unfortunately wouldn't have been the right course of treatment for the severity of the disease. She should have referred me on to a BSGE Centre when she saw the results of the MRI, but she didn't and no one will say why.

Obviously based on the above I do not trust the consultant and I'm not sure if I should be asking to refer my treatment to the same hospital I'm at for my endo care. I don't know if waiting for the biopsy result is a good idea, as I'm aware that endo and cancer can have very similar symptoms and I struggle daily with what we assumed to be just endo related issues. I'm really confused and struggling to get any definitive answers as to what should be happening with my treatment pathway as things are complicated due to my current situation with endo.

  • Hello Gintelle,

I can understand that things may be confusing, but getting your biopsy results might provide more clarity. It might be a good idea to speak to your consultant at your local hospital, as you seem to be happy with the way they handled your endometriosis diagnosis. If you're confused about anything you should contact your medical team as they will be the best people to address your concerns.

    Best wishes,
