Whirlwind 2 weeks.. lump in throat

Hi all,

So, last year I noticed a small pea size lump in my throat.. could barely feel it so left it alone. Then before Christmas I lost my voice.. had a dry irritating cough.. even though I felt fine.. it's only just returned back to normal these last two weeks. I checked my neck for whatever reason and noticed that the lump is there.. and much bigger. Well I took myself off to my Gp and last week I had my ENT appointment where he out a camera up my nose and into my throat to check me over. Now Iv had a letter for an ultrasound on Tuesday. He did say I'm at low risk but my mind can't help but wander. Especially with how rapid my appointment has come through. Surely if it was nothing he would have sent me on my way? I don't really know why I'm posting here. For your experinces I guess? Last year I had a colposcopy as My smear showed I  HPV.. Iv just read that HPV can cause throat issues .. could this be linked?
thanks

  • I can see you haven't had a reply yet MadamC17 so I just wanted to stop by and welcome you to the forum.

Unfortunately no-one here can say for sure whether this is connected but I'm sure your doctor will be able to give some insight so do be sure to mention this when you see them next.

Also, good luck with your ultrasound today. I hope it goes well and that the results show the lump is no cause for concern.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi there,

thanks for your reply. I have had my ultrasound and il be honest I'm feeling a little deflated. There were about four people in the room. Only one spoke to me and the person who scanned me barely said anything at all other than asking me if I'd had an investigation in my thyroid before. So presuming that's where the lump is. He clicked away and measured and that's that. I feel horrendous this evening. Actually really worrying now. Whereas before it was just playing on my mind.
any idea how long it will take for the results? Will they phone me if it's serious? When they send a copy to the ENT consultant will I get a copy too? Sorry so many questions!
    Thanks

    Emma

  • Hi Emma,

I'm in a similar position with my mum-doc did camera up nose for an ear issue (which turned out not to be serious) and found a lump in nose unexpectedly, ordered scan and biopsy and scan has come through already in just under a week-I'm worried too that the doc is thinking something really bad because of how quick it came through. Sorry you are feeling so down at the moment-the waiting and worrying is horrible. I have exactly the same questions as you-sorry I don't have the answers.  There are lots of things a lump can be though, doctors can't tell without doing the tests, so I don't think it neccesarily means anything but best to get checked out ASAP is their thinking because obviously if it is cancer better to catch it sooner rather than later and if it isn't cancer it can be ruled out quickly. Sorry can't be of more help but know what you're going through right now.

  • Hiya,

Thank you for your reply. I hope your mum is doing OK? Do let me know how the biopsy goes. Its just the waiting that is driving me mad. Iv had to shout earlier to stop my little girl running into the road and my throat has been dead sore since. Can't decide if it's the end of this laryngitis iv had for months or its my brain in overdrive worrying! I had my ultrasound on Tuesday so hoping I get my results through soon. Dr Google certainly doesn't help. Wishing you the best if luck xx

  • Bless you the waiting is horrible. My mum had scan last Thurs so waiting for results and for biopsy date to come through, no word yet. She's doing really well, I'm not sure what she's thinking but I'm quite worried as have no idea what the enlarged lump could be but just going to have to wait and see. I don't know if she's worried or not as doc didn't really give any indication of what he thought it was. I know what you mean about google-when my mum first had her ear problem I googled and at first worried cancer (always my first worry) then had just about calmed myself down that the ear problem wasn't going to be anything serious and then they find a lump elsewhere! Google again and even more worried this time. Hoping your results come back fine let me know will be thinking of you x

  • How's your mum getting on cantmoveon?
I was anticipating my results but instead have had a letter to go see the ENT dr a week on Monday.. not sure if i should be anticipating a biopsy. I guess part of me was thinking I'd get a letter saying no problems refer back to gp and presuming they wouldn't call me in for that so wondering what's next.

  • Hi there,

absolutely no news at all this end yet-still waiting for scan results and biopsy date. Hope all goes well at the ENT dr for you-sorry can't give any advice, really don't know how the system works or how long these things take, do update after the ENT though, I will as soon as I hear anything too x
