Breast clinic referral

Hi everyone, new to this so hopefully I'm doing this right.

I went to my gp after 6 or so weeks of experiencing severe breast pain with discharge alongside slight swelling, mainly on my left breast. The gp examined me but couldnt see nor feel any visible lumps but referred me to the breast clinic for further checks just to be safe. She said I should be seen within 2 weeks as that's normally what's aimed for. After hearing nothing I rang the breast clinic today to see when roughly id be getting an appointment to which they told me 4-5 months, I'm thinking this is a good thing but suffer from anxiety so extremely nervous about it all and now the thought of waiting so long. I'm from Northern Ireland.

Has anyone else experienced this before? Many thanks in advance

  • Hiya, I'm 30 and have an urgent referral to the breast clinic app on Friday 12th March. I'm panicking as Iv already had breast cancer at the age of 23 so I'm not wanting to go through it again. I'm glad they have referred you as I struggled getting referred the first time as they brushed it off due to age and then I obv found out it was stage 3 and I had a double mastectomy be refused hormones treatment. Hope you are okay. Xx

  • Hi guys; I'm 27 years old with a little boy and recently went to GP after my mum begged me to get checked. Found two lumps in one breast (only one I'd detected) so waiting on an urgent referral but it's been 5 days, can't help but feel anxcious about waiting for the letter. I have no pain or anything. Just worrying. Should I have heard something by now?

  • Everything was fine which is such a relief xxz

  • Hi everyone,

New to this so hopefully I am doing it right!

I am 27 and at the end of last week I found a small lump in my left breast. I saw my GP yesterday afternoon and she also confirmed that she felt the lump. She told me that she will refer me for an ultrasound. Does anyone know how long the referral letters take to come through at the moment? The Doctor advised that it can take up to 2 weeks.

As I'm sure you all can relate, I have been feeling anxious ever since the appointment and I can't help but panic. I hate to wish time away but I'm already counting down the days until I receive my letter. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you so much X

  • Hi,like you a found a lump on my left breast 2 months ago, went to gp ,they refered me and after one week got the appointment ,on the appointment day I have done a ultrasound,2 mamograms and one biopsy.
Got the result in 10 days and diagnosed with DCIS which mean precancer.

Done lumpectomy surgery(removing just the tissue)a month ago but after the result the doctors decide to do another surgery next wednesday this time mastectomy (whole breast) .

This is my story,I am scared but trying to be strong for my daughters.

I hope you get good news not like me,wish you all the best.

  • Hi,

Thank you for your response. It has given me an indication on when to (hopefully) expect to receive the referral letter. Fingers crossed that it won't be anything serious.

Good luck for your appointment, I'm sure that they will take excellent care of you and that you will be okay. Sending you love X
