Large Cervical Ectropion found during polyp removal

Hi all, just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience to me and can put my mind at rest.

I've a complicated medical history since last Oct. long story but 3 weeks after starting oral HRT I suffered with thrombosis (DVT & PE) so I'm completing a 6 month course of anticoagulants after immediately stopping the HRT.

I have history of heavy irregular monthly week long bleeds. But my 1st cycle after starting my medication for thrombosis lasted 4 weeks with haemorrhaging. This put me back in A&E resulting in a referral to gynae. After Various scans and a very painful hysteroscopy I was diagnosed with a thick endometrial lining & polyps.

Polyps were removed during a second hysteroscopy under GA last Thursday.

However during the procedure my consultant diagnosed a large cervical ectropian and I'm assuming a biopsy was taken as my discharge notes mention I will be contacted with histology results. I also had a letter to hand to my GP.

unfortunately I was too out of it to understand what she was saying to me whilst I was in recovery. And she had to move on to the next patient for surgery so didn't come back to me. All I can recall is her saying that the polyp removal went well & she'll write to me.

I haven't been able to resist google search, my understanding re ectropians is they aren't common in women of my age, more common in younger women using contraception. I haven't used hormonal contraceptives for many many years.

Also ectropians and cervical cancel present/look the same and diagnosis can only be confirmed with the histology results.

So now I'm waiting and trying not to worry.

Has anyone of my age experienced anything similar?

Thank you so much in advance xx

  • Hi Clare,

I'm younger than you so can't relate exactly, though I have had a weird looking ectropion (they burned it off in the end, but might come back).

What I will say is that ectropion can be caused by high oestrogen - so maybe your HRT caused it? If your doctor had suspected malignancy I'm sure she'd have said/written something, rather than making what sounds like a firm diagnosis of ectropion.

Are you sure the histology results aren't for your polyps and/or endometrium?

In any case, I very much hope you get an all clear result soon, whatever the histology results are for! Did you peek at the letter to your GP? I definitely would have!

  • Thank you so much for the reply.

I was only on HRT for 3 weeks last Oct so the additional hormones will be out of my system. And haven't been on hormonal contraceptives for 10 years.

letter to the GP said 'large cervical ectropian, await histology results', my discharge letter said that I will be written to.

I may speak with my GP to see if they have any further detail. X

  • Hi,

I have a history of endometriosis, and have had lettz treatment back in 2012 when I was 19 for CIN 2. I have only been on combined pill for a month when I got sent to colposcopy for bleeding problems, where she had said something about ectropion and had took a biopsy to check. I'm still waiting for my results and I too have read that it can look a lot like early cervical cancer, maybe this is why they take biopsy results.
