Worried about melanoma

I'm concerned about some moles my husband has. He had 3 moles removed a few years back and we were told that one was showing the first stage of melanoma (I can't remember all the details as I was only in my late teens) he had another mole a few years later that I didn't like the look of. He went to the gp who basically said it looked OK but that if he removed every mole I didn't like, my hubby would have no skin left.

My husband has around 60 moles on his back and several have changed. Some have got darker patches in the middle, some have changed shape and one has gone much lighter and raised. My question is, what should my husband do now? He's reluctant to go to gp as they weren't interested last time and hubby says he's fine . He has private health care.

Many thanks for reading

  • Hi,

I would advise that your hubby does get them checked out, either by his GP or go privately. It may be that your husband's first mole was a dysplastic (atypical) mole which is classed as pre-cancerous. People with this type of mole tend to be covered in moles & they should keep an eye on them in case any others turn dysplastic. I don't suppose your husband kept any of his paperwork (appointment letter etc) from the first mole removal? If he has, & it mentions a dysplastic mole, he should take it to his GP and ask for a referral - this will strengthen his case with the GP (who probably has no idea about dysplastic moles & their prevalence).

If hubby isn't happy about seeing the same GP, ask the practice if they have one that is trained in dermatology (more practices are now having one GP trained up on how to deal with moles). If they haven't, I suggest going privately. If it's then found to be dysplastic or cancerous your hubby can always transfer back to the NHS for further treatment. Please don't be put off because of one uneducated GP! Hopefully his moles will be fine but they need checking. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)
