Lump in throat

Hi... after some advice please? Last couple of days I've had a sore throat, so painful swallowing is difficult. I looked in my throat and can see a round raised red lump. I have no tonsils. I've smoked for 35 years. I saw an out of hours GP this evening thinking he would say I needed antibiotics or it was a virus. He said my throat looks sore but the lump seems unrelated and has asked I see my GP Monday for an ENT referral as it looks like a growth. Wasn't expecting this so I'm worried. Does anyone have any advice (apart from quit smoking which I am arranging with a clinic on Monday) thank you.
