Thyroid Goiter - normal bloods

Hiya,

I'm just after other people's experiences and maybe just some reassurance as my head's a shed.
I'm 30-years old and I found a lump on my neck a week ago that seems to be on my thyroid. Blood tests show values all in the normal range (I don't have specific values to hand) so they're not concerned about over or under-active thyroid issues etc. I had a camera up my nose to check my throat and all seems okay. The next step is a scan and biopsy (FNA). They've got me on the 2WW pathway.

I've been a bit of a nelly and Googled and I've found similar stories to mine with some people who have later been diagnosed with thyroid cancer so am worrying a bit.
I guess I'm just wondering what the likelihood is that this is what I have and how quickly will I know for sure a diagnosis either way.

Thanks in advance

  • Hello ShazziH,

I just wanted to welcome you to our forum. I hope you won't have to wait too long for your scan and biopsy results. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting for these important results.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • Hey, I just came across your post as I'm going through the same thing.

I have an urgent ENT appointment coming up about my swollen neck lymph nodes and swollen thyroid gland which showed up as a "slightly heterogeneous" in the ultrasound. All blood results were normal.

    I'm so scared.

Can I ask what the results were of your scan and biopsy?

    I hope you are well.

  • Hi Sam,

I got seen quite quickly for the scan and got the biopsy result of Thy3f in March 2020. This is an indeterminate result and means to diagnose the follicular lesion they need to remove it and send to pathology. Sadly due to COVID this never happened and I'm still waiting. It's quite frustrating and I've had to pursue private appointments for scans to monitor as my NHS care has been shocking - nothing since May 2020. Scan shows growth in my 3 nodules but still nothing from the hospital despite me chasing.
I have heterogeneous texture too - that means likely thyroiditis, even if your bloods are fine at the mo.

Sorry I can't offer you a more complete story and I hope it doesn't cause worry because I see so many who have had much better experiences than this. Please don't worry about the scan and biopsy; they're honestly not bad at all. Over really quick and you'll get results 2 weeks later.

  • I have a swelling on the right side of my neck that meant investigation. Thyroid hormone levels were fine but v high antibodies attacking thyroid. Scan, aspiration on nodules and a nightmare 2week wait for biopsy results having been told high risk cancer thankfully turned out to be benign .result goitre and follow up in a year.  I have gone nuts obsessing about every lump and bump being a cancer but am trying to believe consultant is correct in diagnoses. It is scary when the c word is dropped at you .

  • Hi

Sorry to reply to this thread but came across it as I was looking things up.

I am in the same position where I have a lump in my neck. GP said it feels like it's on my thyroid. I've had thyroid bloods done and they have returned in normal range but I still have this lump. GP has also referred me for an urgent Ultrasound scan and I have only been waiting a week for the appointment. How long do urgent scan referral appointments usually take? Can I also ask what were other peoples results from their scan.

    Thanks everyone

  • Just to let you know, the ultrasound probably won't give you a final answer. Most people - not all, but most - need a biopsy. Just to say that because it can be scary when they send you for further tests.

I don't know how long urgent appointments take because I'm in Ireland and...yeah, everything takes longer over here (an awful lot longer sometimes!)

Thyroid nodules are extremely common and the vast majority are benign - like 95%ish. If it is a thyroid nodule, it's not going to go away but that doesn't mean it's anything serious. Most likely it's just a cyst. I'm not sure the bloods mean much either way. Most nodules and many thyroid cancers - probably the majority - don't have any symptoms.

Even if it if cancer, it's not what you might be expecting when you hear the word "cancer." The most common forms of thyroid cancer have a survival rate close to 100% and they don't use chemotherapy or radiotherapy except in very particular circumstances.

I wasn't told the details of my scan result, just that a biopsy had been recommended but that there was nothing to indicate cancer. Basically, the scan alone gave little information either way. I think in some cases, it can indicate a biopsy isn't necessary and sometimes it can highlight concerning features that mean cancer is likely, but on it's own, it can't diagnose cancer.

  • Thanks for your reply.

I've had my Ultrasound scan and as you mentioned I have nodules. They don't like the look of one of them and it has blood flow so it's been graded higher. I'm now on a 2WW for a needle biopsy.

I know only a small percentage are cancerous so trying to remain positive and optimistic.

  • Yeah, most are not cancer and even those that are are treatable and very, very rarely life-threatening. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in November 2019, had my thyroid removed in January 2020 and was back at work a month later.
