Inflamed mole with hair

Hi there,

I'm a 28-year-old male, and have had a mole on my stomach for as long as I can remember. Recently, for the first time, a black hair has begun to grow out of it. This caused it to become more raised than before, so I plucked the hair and it settled back down. However, the hair has now grown back and the mole has become inflamed and painful to the touch.

Could this be a melanoma? I read somewhere that the fact my mole has a hair growing out of it means it almost certainly isn't cancerous, but I'm not sure and would love some reassurance/advice.

My situation is slightly complicated by the fact I'm abroad for the next two months, with little opportunity to see a GP.

Thanks,

Pete

  • Hello Pete
I'm sorry to hear that you have some concerns about a mole. Unfortunately the only person who will be able to give you answers regarding this mole is a Dr. I do hope that you're able to make arrangements to see someone.

  • Hi,

As Jenn has already said, only a GP can give you the reassurance that your mole is OK. Generally speaking, a mole with a hair growing from it is less likely to be cancerous. However, you have to bear in mind that melanoma doesn't always follow the rules so get it checked out when you get home & hopefully it will be fine.
