Referral to ENT for lump in neck

Hi..

I went to the GP today as I kept feeling my neck and convinced myself that there was a lump bigger on the left side compared to the right and subsequently couldn't spot prodding and poking and working myself up.
I went today to seek some reassurance but instead my GP said he felt 2 lumps and had to refer me (2 weeks) to the Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for an ultra sound.

He did say he was 99% sure it was my lymph nodes and not cancerous but I'm so worried.
my symptoms also include the 'frog in throat' sensation and a few aches and pains in my neck.

anyone else going through or been through something similar?

  • Hiya, firstly, I really hope that everything’s okay, and I’m sure it is. But my cancer did just start as a lump in my neck. I kept going to the GP and they gave me antibiotics. Eventually i kicked up a fuss and they did a blood test but I never heard anything back. I wasn’t diagnosed until months later when it had spread to my lungs. I’d ended up in a&e coughing up blood, with a temp of over 41 degrees. They eventually did a biopsy and I was diagnosed with ALCL. I’ve had 5 rounds of chemo and am starting my final round in a week or so (depending on bloods). My latest scans look much better. I really hope my story doesn’t worry you, just wanted to share my experience as it reminded me of a similar time in my life. Praying that everything’s okay for you.

  • Thanks for sharing your experience Ella. I hope the rest of your treatment goes well and you make a full recovery.

I am obviously very worried at this point as I have no idea what will happen next week but my I'm holding onto what my GP said, that it felt 99% like lymph nodes but we need to do the tests to rule out the other 1%. He has acted very quickly and I'm being seen by a specialist next week.

Did you have no other symptoms at all? Where about was your lump?

  • I had 2 lumps on the left side of my neck, they were the only symptoms I had for a month or so, they were painless but my neck was quite stiff. I also had rapid weight loss, fatigue and had symptoms of an infection, temperature, cough, etc. I was actually misdiagnosed as being severely anemic. But it got a lot worse the week before I was diagnosed because I developed pneumonia as a complication. I couldn’t breathe properly and I also suffered stomach pains. It’s definitely worth getting seen by a specialist, even if it’s just to put your mind at ease. Even if it is that 1%, it will be caught early and you’ll be okay. Hope all goes well.

  • Hi, thought I'd give an update.

i went to see a consultant today at the oral and maxillofacial hospital, it wasn't at the ENT.

he had a good feel of my neck and examined my mouth and said all felt and looked normal. He said the lump I had was a bone and just part of my neck.
he said all was fine but for my own reassurance has arranged a neck scan and will then go back to see him on 18th March.
    Am certainly feeling relieved.
hope all is going ok with you all.

will update again when I've had the scan.

  • So glad to hear that. Hope the scan goes well. x

  • Hi nikki

i know your post is now a few months old. I hope all is well following your core biopsy. I am helping a friend who's also found a lump in her thyroid gland. Despite multiple FNA the results have all come back inconclusive. Her doctor has recommended a hemithyrodectomy as a last resort which she's not keen on. They have said core biopsies are not done as an investigative measure rather to find out more info on an already malignant lump. She has researched but couldn't find any hospital performing core biopsies in thyroid glands. I just wanted to ask which hospital have done a core biopsy for you please? It would really help. Thanks x

  • I've been going through the same. Was told just before Xmas that lump on my next needs to be looked at in a 2 week Window and could be lymphoma. Went back 3 weeks later to be told this need to be looked at in 2 week Window and I was going on holiday the following day and was asked if I had good travel insurance. I had an ultra sound the week I can back and wasntold we don't know what this is we'll send you for an Mri. Had an appointment this week for end if March with ENT. Considering everyone was saying a 2 week Window ive been waiting nearly 4mths for an answer
